I am having a heck of a time identifying my Automatic tranny. It's out of a '70 LTD w/ 351W. It is a 3 piece unit (bellhs, unit, tail), with 14 bolts on the pan. The dipstick goes into the body, not the pan and the pan is rectangular shaped (C-4??). It is 17"+/- from the front of the bellhousing to the tranny/tail split. The number on the drivers side is C9ZP7006A 18. Thanks in advance for the help, this has been driving me nuts, trying to decide if it's what I want to put into my 54 F-100
Most likely it is an FMX trans since it came out of a full size car. They are tough when maintained and kept in a stock setup. Just not very much aftermarket support for them.
To make sure it is an FMX take a look a couple of things. Both the C-4 and FMX are 3 section units. The FMX's center section is cast iron. The C-4's is aluminum. The way the bellhousing attaches is also different. The FMX has 4 large bolts that attach the bell from the outside through holes in the case. The C-4 bell attaches with 7 bolts from the inside of the bell.
For a mostly stock motor I wouldn't be afraid of it. Just have a basic rebuild done and it'll last for years.
