Smog pump on a 6.9 ... There is no smog pump on a 6.9!

What you are likely talking about is the vacuum pump and you do need that if you want the heater and things to work that require vacuum.

Convert brakes to hydroboost, ditch the C6 trans for a bolt-action, install a PSD vacuum pump or entirely convert your HVAC to cable controls of a non-A/C truck - only then you can lose the vacuum pump.

Since I did my hydraboost brake conversion my vacuum pump is on the way out again.

Defrost only untill the pump warms up and starts making vacuum again.

Given the cost of a vacuum pump, I can live with defrost only, that is where it usually is anyway until I reach operating temp in the winter.

I remember reading about some guys that were putting 4 cyl tractor engines in 1/2 ton Fords, they found a 12 volt vacuum pump in the Grainger book that would supply their brake booster.

How about a Super Duty electric vacuum pump, for the basic control needs I think that would be an awesome conversion.

Or as already suggested an industrial 12v type.

Yep, hydroboosted trucks with hand-shakers or E4ODs can use the PSD or another electric pump. Trucks with the C6 trans may however burn up an electric pump as them need constant vacuum supplied to the line pressure modulator on the trans, which would likely cause the electric vacuum pump to run all the time.

Dave, my old vacuum pump was on its way too, I found out that if I revv up the engine to 2k or so and keep it there for a minute the pump will build up enough vacuum for the HVAC to operate properly.

I once asked the question about the electric superduty vacuum pump as a replacement for a regular brake boost vacuum pump and the consensus was it doesn't pull a hard enough vacuum nor does it have enough CFM to be safe.

That reminds me though. I need to check the vacuum in my truck as the brakes seemed a little weak lately.

David, this is correct, the PSD pump is pretty weak, and it can't operate power brakes. Look for one off a school bus tho, as many of those had an electric vacuum pump as a backup for the main engine-driven one.
