373 rear end in an F450
#16
I didn't know I can't receave pivate messages, I would change that if I know how. I got the gears for $1200 dollars frnot and rear and installed them my self. the original speed pickup will not work in the rear end with new gears, i machined A spocket to go on the out put shaft of transfer case and made a bracket to hold pickup mounted to trasfer case.
so... how hard was that exactly? changing the gears isnt that hard to me but all this fabrication sounds like it could be a pain in the ***. would it be better to just go with 4.10s?

I am not new to the pages, to Ford trucks or diesel engines with different gear ring sets. My 95 had 4:10... my 02 had 3:73 and now my 2010 has 4:30's. I have run a gammit of gearing. All good results for what I wanted or needed. Not alot mentioned about 4:30 gearing. My 2010 has them and I run 2000 Rpms at 60 MPH. I have only 10000 miles and pulling my 15.5K fifthwheel I am getting 10.8 MPG right now. Throw the Jeep on back and it goes down to 9.3 MPG .. I hold 60 MPH as it runs real good at 2000 RPMs.
I do not know how this will vette out as the engine breaks in more... hopefully better

Considering the kind of work you do I think I'd opt out of the gear change and install something like a Gear Vendors overdrive. That way you still have those deep gears when you need to haul heavy, and the rest of the time you can run the overdrive for lighter loads and/or better mileage. I had one of those (still have it actually) in an old 7.3 and it was the bees knees.
The thing with a gear change is you are stuck with what you get, whereas with the OD unit you can have it all.

While the add says they do make over and under drives, the OD model is only available for our trucks.......
TEX450. I would look at a transmission upgrade something like Suncoast if you are going to go to 3.73 gears and plan to haul 24K on a trailer. There is goign to be a lot of stress on the gear train getting started and pulling a grade plus you have a tuner. A simple gearing/roadspeed calculator will help determine RPM for a given gearing in OD and for a given MPH. This should help you decide which set of gears will work best. Remeber flat land you can run 3.XX or even 2.XX ratios but road speed will suffer greatly when pulling a grade so will fuel economy. You need to find the balance of fuel consumption vs gearing vs road speed.
I am looking at the option of installing a SunCoast converter and trans with custom electronics tune or just plain switching to a ZF6 speed or possibly a 7 speed with 4.10 gears. The factory auto just wastes too much power with 4.30 gears until it locks up.
Before winter rolled in I was getting 17.5-18 empty and 16 with 4K in the bed (2 runs of 425 miles w/load) Now withthe cold here over teh last couple of weeks (Teens) the mileage has dropped to 14-15 w/o the cold front. Looking for a cold front to see if that will help but the deler is not stating a delivery time. H&S 5 inch sewer pipe Volant CAI......
