engine problems

i have a 2005 250 diesel 6.0L. it idles terribly and drives terribly! it sounds like it's missing when it idles or when you get on the gas. it is intermitent though and i can't really tell you when it's worse (cold or hot). can't afford to let the dealership take all my money. any ideas what may be causing this? i appreciate any and all advice.

How many miles on your truck?

Warranty is up this year depending on your in service date....

Sounds like it may either be your ICP (Injector Control Pressure) sensor (passenger side valve cover) or your FICM (Fuel Injector Control Module) located on a bracket on the driver side valve cover.

The ICP sensnor controls how much oil the HPOP pushes out to the inejctors at whatever RPM. If the sensor is bad or slowly dying in your case, it can't get a proper reading, so it makes the best of what it can read.

The FICM controls the timing of the injectors; i.e. how much fuel is dumped in and when. If you have a low voltage situation or even a chaffed wire that will cause an issue.

i've 109k on it so i'm past my warranty. here's another piece of the puzzle. i was just checking the fluids and saw that i was low on coolant. i rode to the auto store and it was doing the same thing. after i added a gallon of coolant it seems to be fine. could it be that low coolant could be the culprit? i had some puddling under the truck but just assumed it was from the a/c. it might be a leak. i'll look into that.

as for a chaffed wire, i had to replace a two year old battery the other day (under warranty thankfully). would a chaffed wire cause a battery to die prematurely?

also, i did have a sct tuner that i put on it with the highest horsepower setting. worried that might have caused some problems.

You need to really look where that coolant is comming from, if you have a blown head gasket it can cause you to lose compression, have horrible gas mileage, run like crap, the engine may or may not run hot, I would suggest you get a compression guage and check each cylinder to see where each cylinder sits on the compression stroke.

i thought i might had found a leak a while back on the passenger side where the heater hoses go through the firewall. couldn't ever see it. i think its a thermostat control on that same side too and i see white discoloration around it. also the coolant tank has white all over it too. i'm in construction and as everyone knows the industry has tanked. i'm really worried i've totally screwed this engine up with that stupid tuner!

i don't get any dtc's when i hook up to the obd. would head gaskets or other major problems show a trouble code?

Didn't notice this before, without studs you should'nt have been running nothing more than the Performance tune (80hp). The street tune (120hp) without an exhaust is enough to cause issues when you're on it.

Depending on the dealer, you may be able ask for an AWA or After Warranty Assistance claim. Seeing as you're just out of warranty, this may be an option for you.

Given the tough times they may not approve it, but it's worth a shot. It's probably best not to mention anything about your tuner either.

If they tell you it's the headgaskets and are willing to absorb some of the repair cost, be sure and purchase some ARP headstuds to prevent this issue from occuring again.

Depending on what a headgasket does it may not throw up any codes. I would definitly say if you take it to the shop take out any tuner data and put it back bone stock. Have you tried taking the tune out?

As was recommended above, I would yank the tuner out first and foremost. I would then look at cleaning the EGR system. The other things like the pump and injector timing would probably show up on the OBD reader. The EGR, and the head studs, are known issues with the 6.0.

ok. new problem. it is dumping coolant from the passenger side big time. looks like it is coming from the exhaust that goes back to the turbo? can't see anything dripping above it and it is leaking like crazy. had a puff of white smoke and then it started dumping. could the exhaust be filled with coolant so much that it is leaking about half way up the rising pipe? would this not just shut down the engine if the exhaust was full of coolant?

just ran a combustion leak test and it came back positive that i have a combustion leak.

Sounds like the head gasket is gone.

It could be the EGR cooler hose that's leaking - it's tough to see it back in there.

Page 74: Unique Service Procedures

If you don't have any evidence of coolant puking (white residue around the degas bottle) I doubt you have a head gasket problem.

Just heard back from the dealership. EGR cooler is gone. They have to replace it and the oil something or other. They are going to clean out the turbo at the same time as well. All in all, I'm looking at $2500. Does this sound right?

They have to replace the EGR cooler and the oil cooler. $2500 I guess sounds about right, but you better make sure your headgaskets aren't too far behind from failing.
