I have a 1973 F100 Ranger 2wd with a 360 and C-6. I always heard that the F-series had 31 spline axles in the 9". I recently found out that some have 28 spline. Is one more common than the other? Are the 31's for 4x4's only or are they an option for all? I just wanted to know if there is a way to know without pulling an axle.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Apr-02 AT 11:41 AM (EST)]I just went thru this at the junkyard last weekend. Counting the splines inside the carrier is a pain!
Someone correct me if this is wrong, please. There should be a metal tag on the diff. with numbers stamped into it. One of the numbers in the corner is a 4 digit number like ?28? or ?31? that shows the 28 or 31 spline. That's how we found my 31 spline in a barrel of diffs.
