I have an '85 F350 diesel dually crew (with lotsa miles). The power steering went suddenly. I looked underneath and noticed a big puddle of PS fluid. The steering gear appears to be leaking (from the steering arm, not the hoses).
Long story short...since I have to pull the steering gear/pump anyway, should I rebuild or replace? While pricing parts on-line, I noticed they sell rebuild/seal kits for both parts...about $15/ea.
takes a special puller to get the pitman arm off. once off that seal can be replaced without removeing the box fro the truck
Well, I think I'll probably pull both pieces regardless. The pump has been run without fluid and there may be other leaks, plus the hoses are old. Figure it would be better to pull everything, inspect, clean, etc.
Just not sure if throwing in a seal kit is going to solve my problem...
P.S. - What kind of "special" puller? I have several different pullers (ball-joint, etc.).
it is actually called pitman arm puller. ball joint puller, finger pullers won't work. this slides around the arm, and has a bolt that drives aginst the shaft. mine cost about $40. rebuilt pump from advanced cost about same, you need another type of puller for that, you have to change the pully over, new one don't come with one, plus to take pump out of bracket, you have to pull the pully. rebuilt steering box about $70. new high pressure line about $25. return line just use 3/8 fuel line and 2 mini clamps. I just did this repair to one of my trucks last year. I know I could have rebuilt everything, but labor, downtime, and the chance there is a major part defective, well you know. plus too buying the parts is the lifetime warrenty. I can't get that when I rebuild something
