Please help! This weekend I was installing my rebuilt C6 in to my 1982 F150. The truck had a 4.9L and a 3 speedover drive, I pull the whole drive train out and replaced it with a rebuilt 351(with all kind of goodies and a modified C6. The 351M had a manual trans configured befor. I changed flywheel, removed pilot bearing and jacked up the trans jack and bolted trans to eng and guess what!! The eng plate between the eng and trans is different for the manual and automatic. All the main holes and pins lined up, but the lower portion, starer holes and the bottom two holes do not line up on the plate. I know it need to find a 351m plate that matches to an automatic, but were can I get one? The ford dealer stoped manifacturing them years ago. Does anyone have one laying a round or have a source to get one. Thanks Art
Hi Art, you should be able to pick up one from a local recycler. Find an old 400 engine from a LTD, 351m/400/460 from a truck that may have the back plate on it. A new one could be bought from Ford to fit say a 87 to 95 460 truck with a C6. Note a back plate from a E4OD with a 460 bolt pattern should work but the lower inspection plate holes may not line up and I'm not sure on the starter holes. I could check on this a little closer Monday.
Kenneth, Again that was an outstanding Video on rebuilding the C6. I never rebuilt a trans befor. Many Eng's ,It took me about 8hrs total! I used the B/M trans kit. It also showed how to mod the valve body with a shift kit. Well you can see by my problem above I did not get it installed. I called our the Ford dealer with no luck. I called our used parts yards and nothing. The older stuff they get rid of fast. Thanks for your help!! Oh one more question!! I bought a Trans temp guage from Auto Meter. It has a sending unit that looks like a small water sending unit. Can this be screwed into the C6 trans. There is a port on the drivers side, I think is is a pressure check port. Thanks again! Art
Hi Art, I don't think I would screw that senting unit in any of the pressure ports. You may be able to use one of those add on drain pan plugs I think B&M and others make and screw the unit in it. Mounting it in the side of the pan instead of the bottom would work best (be sure nothing inside the trans. touches the sending unit). However the pipe thread on the drain plug may be different than the sending unit. Most of trans. gauges come with a cooler line/sending unit adapter to mount in the return cooler line. I feel this setup is about the best all around way to do it. Some other guys on the forum might know a part number for that adapter. Good luck......Ken.
EVERYONE!!! I got the Png Plate. After a long frustrating search I found one at: calkinsclassicparts@tularosa.net and is in route as I type. He has helped me before locating hard to find stuff and has always come to my rescue. Thanks again for everyones help. Art Gillings
I hope your problem is solved, but there is one thing that I could not quite get from your post. What engine was the C6 mounted to before?
I understand that you are now installing a 351M. That means that the C6 had to come from behind a 351M, 400, 429, or 460 in order to fit. There are two other C6 bolt patterns for other engines that will not work.
HI, I am not quite sure what the c6 came out of. I know it was an LTD and was told it was a big block bolt pattern. I have had the trans bolted to the 351m and all lined up except the lower two bolts and the starter hole. I belive the engine plate is my problem. I foud one and was verfied to fir the 351m in an auto configuration. I was told that the manual tran's plate was longer. The 351M came with a eng plate and manual flywheel out of a 1979 F150 pickup.. Thanks for the feed back. Someday I will get this all together.
If it came from a mid to late 70s LTD you are probably ok because they most likely had a 351M or 400 engine. If it came from a late 60s LTD, you still have a problem. If you cannot identify the transmission by the id tag (missing?), then you are just going to have to try it and see. Hope it works, if not repost.
PS
Don't be suprised if the starter won't quite fit the hole. That does not mean that everything else is not right. Many automatic and straight shift starters are slightly different size on the front, even for the same engine.
