Why spark plugs pop out of heads
#33
Not sure if it was mentioned here but the reason ford has problems with spark plugs is because they still use the 1960's taper plugs! Makes me want to slap people. Today most all auto makers use the crush washer type plugs which are far superior to the old style taper plugs. The taper plugs put to much stress on the threads in the head and when used in aluminum there is a very fine line between tight and galling and ruining the threads in the head. Crush washer plugs do a very very good job of keeping the right torque and not seizing in the head. While a taper plug is normally either to tight or to loose. They loosen up by themselves many times and wobble around in the hole ruining the threads and is the cause of pulling the aluminum thread out. If not loosening they seat themselves to tight and gall the aluminum (kind of welding the aluminum threads to the hardened high carbon spark plug threads). so when you go to unscrew the plug the aluminum threads come out with the plug.
This kind of stupidity pisses me off right to the core!

I did mention this, Snowseeker. But you explained it much more thoroughly then I did. I merely stated that I never had any problems on snowmobiles, lawnmowers, or anything else with aluminum heads and those mentioned machines and engines all utilized the crush washer on the sparkplug. Reps to you for explaining it so well.

i have 103k on my 2004 and i changed my plugs three times so far in the 5.4. Ever time i remove one plug at a time clean out the spark plug hole and blow it air with air, then silver anti seize the new plug and torque to 15ftlbs. I just changed them three weeks ago and it only took me a half hour, i still knock on wood ever time before i attempt this job though...
