Truck hard starts when cold

Title pretty much says it all. If the truck has been sitting (in any temp) for a few hours, I've got to crank it for a while before it will start.

Checked the GPR, changed the fuel filter, and looked at the HPOP level.

Anything other ideas?

Batteries? Weak batteries make starting difficult. When mine went bad, they had enough juice to crank but not to fire.

If you checked the relay and the plugs themselves then maybe go in the route of a possible HPOP issue or worn inj orings. Does the CEL come on during these extended cranks. IF yes possible ICP unable to build at engine crank.

Check the oil level in the HPOP reservoir after it has been sitting. It should be about 3/4 to 1 inch from top. If the HPOP is draining down extra cranking is needed to fill HPOP and build pressure. There can be an unseen leak between bottom of reservoir and the front cover and drain down inside.

Pic of gasket on top of front cover. Fuel bowl and reservoir removed.

The HPOP was about an inch from the top.

The truck doesn't seem to crank slowly - should I still check the batteries?

The CEL light does not come on during these cranks that I've noticed. I'll double check.

GPR has been tested, so I've ruled that out I will check the batteries and glow plugs tonight.

How big a job are glow plugs in terms of cost and time?

This time of year you should not need any glow plug assistance. I would check all the electrical connections, put the batteries on charge and then see what ya got.

I thought the same thing, but heard that they can still cause a hard start in the summer. Can somebody confirm?

On a cold motor and a 50* or so morning, I still need to wait for my GP's to warm things up a bit or my truck won't start very easily.

You stated "If the truck has been sitting (in any temp) for a few hours".

Does that include overnight?

Replaced a few months ago. Wouldn't the starter fail regardless of how long the truck had been sitting?

Well if ya just replaced it recently it may be fine, I just replaced mine after checking everything else possible. It usually first thing in the morning was a slow starter, kinda like there was a drain on it overnight. Then after drivin it it would usually start right up,(far as I knew since I bought it used) then over time it got more sporadic and finicky, so I crawled under and pulled the starter took it to A.Z. and they tested it for me 30 seconds later I was whippin out the credit card for a new one, and boy does she start like a champ now . Keep in mind any electrical equipment can and will take a dump at anytime new or old sometimes
