High Mounted Brake Light
I'm sure this has come before but I did a search and couldn't find anything. I've got a 96 Explorer & the high mounted brake light has burned out. The Haynes repair manual doesn't really cover this repair for my year. What's the trick to getting at the bulb?

The OE light is a neon - and as Aquanaut said - has a ballast. My bulb had actually shattered from the closing of the liftgate.
It's an assembly that is riveted to the liftgate, and cost me about $212 three years ago.
The LED strip option is also feasible, but you'll still have to drill out the rivets to insert/wire them in.
