I need to remove the seal which the torque converter slides into on an E40D (Input Seal?). Anyway, with the shaft(input shaft) sticking out of the opening the seal is in, I am not sure how to get a bite on the seal without a special tool- if in fact a special tool is needed. I removed the nine bolts that appear to be holding the plate in place that the seal is pressed into. But it didn't just come off and I don't want to start beating or pulling on this thing if something else is holding it in. How do I get this seal out so I can replace it? Thanks.
Which seal are you trying to replace? The front pump seal is the big round one held in by the ring of bolts. The shaft seal is just a press in seal that can be removed carefully with a seal hook or even a screw driver if you're careful enough.
yeah all i want to replace is the little seal. i didnt want to start prying on anything without knowing... ill put the bolts back in. i dont see how you could get a seal remover on it the way the shaft is is all in the way. do you have to have a special tool? i dont even see how to get a screwdrive in there as tight as it is.
The way I got mine out was to take the edge of a knife blade and work around the outer edge or flange of the seal. You can also use a device called a seal hook to pull it with. The metal space between the plastic seal part and the lip or flange on the outside is pretty soft so if you're careful you can get it out with a flat blade screw driver. When you buy the replacement seal you will see how easily it can be hooked and pulled out. When you get it out check the shaft to make sure it's not rough and tap the new one in using a block making sure you keep it staight. This seal is really just to keep fluid from splashing out and isn't meant to hold a lot of pressure. Usually they only start leaking when they get worn or harden and crack. While you've got the tranny down go ahead and replace the fluid, especially if the old is a little syrupy, brown or stinky. Good luck:-)
thanks for the info, ill have to give it try with the knife and screwdriver. i have been having the "e40d" vibration and shudder for about a year and a half. i decided to replace the t/c (before i read all the posts about draining it as a fix). i also had a bad leak that looked like it was coming out around the rubber hole cover at the bottom of the bell house. with all the shaking going on for as long as it did, i felt that the seal had probably been worked over and needed to be replaced. thanks again.
