2x4 to 4x4 conversion
I have an '89 F250 single cab 2x4 and want to convert it to 4x4. I can get a donor truck (92 ext cab F250 4x4) for a thousand bucks will everything bolt up from the one to the other? Also does engine size matter? Mine is a 460 and the other is ???? (haven't gone and looked at it yet). Both vehicles are automatics, I can call and get specifics on the motor if it does matter. I'd like to get started on this project fairly soon, lemme know if it would be problematic and/or worth my time.
Dude says it has 38's on it and I'll check to see if it has shackle reversal on it when I go look.<!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->

If its got a bad motor you can always put the 460 in the 4x4. Seems to be alot of extra work to convert a 2x4 to 4x4 when you have one already together right there.....
1 thousand bucks can make a decent impact on a solid axle install.
D60 up front, divorced NP205, and its a done deal. Couple of x-members, some springs, and viola, instant 4wd. You wont have to change transmissions, this will allow you to keep everuthing the same and go right from 2wd to bad a$$. Eliminate the problematic TTB, and never even deal with that messed up stuff.
COnverting a 4wd of this year or era is not a breeze, and for the same amount of work, actually less doing it my way, you can actually finish the project and enjoy it sooner with some real "wow" factor instead of building someting that is just not all that exciting.
To the other poster I have to keep my truck my old man bought it brand new in '89 and I've had some great times in it with friends who are no longer with me so I'm doing what I can to restore it with what I would like to have in it.
Is there a parts list I can get in order to make what I need to do easier? I'm a vision oriented learner and this will be my first. Also with the divorced xfer case do I get to keep my old rear end or do I have to swap it?
The axles dont know or care what type of case that turns the driveshafts, so no, you wont have to change the rear axle if you dont want to.
Regular old lift springs or lift method for the rear will have you level again, and this is about it.
You will have to be good with a tape measure and have enough skill to weld when necessary, but this shackle reverse kit is probably the easiest way to convert the 2wd to 4wd.
