2x4 to 4x4 conversion

I posted this in another place but haven't gotten many hits maybe yall can help.

I have an '89 F250 single cab 2x4 and want to convert it to 4x4. I can get a donor truck (92 ext cab F250 4x4) for a thousand bucks will everything bolt up from the one to the other? Also does engine size matter? Mine is a 460 and the other is ???? (haven't gone and looked at it yet). Both vehicles are automatics, I can call and get specifics on the motor if it does matter. I'd like to get started on this project fairly soon, lemme know if it would be problematic and/or worth my time.

Dude says it has 38's on it and I'll check to see if it has shackle reversal on it when I go look.<!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->

Why not keep the 250 4x4 as your truck and get rid of the 2x4....??
If its got a bad motor you can always put the 460 in the 4x4. Seems to be alot of extra work to convert a 2x4 to 4x4 when you have one already together right there.....

Hek why spend all of the money just to install F250 TTB stuff under there?
1 thousand bucks can make a decent impact on a solid axle install.
D60 up front, divorced NP205, and its a done deal. Couple of x-members, some springs, and viola, instant 4wd. You wont have to change transmissions, this will allow you to keep everuthing the same and go right from 2wd to bad a$$. Eliminate the problematic TTB, and never even deal with that messed up stuff.
COnverting a 4wd of this year or era is not a breeze, and for the same amount of work, actually less doing it my way, you can actually finish the project and enjoy it sooner with some real "wow" factor instead of building someting that is just not all that exciting.

Right on, that answered alot of my questions. I thought the '92 had TTB but wasn't sure. I'd love to give my truck some "wow" factor and the D60 up front would definitely do it. How do you guys usually go about getting those axles? Just Craigslist and Ebay searching?

To the other poster I have to keep my truck my old man bought it brand new in '89 and I've had some great times in it with friends who are no longer with me so I'm doing what I can to restore it with what I would like to have in it.

Is there a parts list I can get in order to make what I need to do easier? I'm a vision oriented learner and this will be my first. Also with the divorced xfer case do I get to keep my old rear end or do I have to swap it?

To make this easy, you will undoubtedly be installing front leaf springs, and the shackle will have to be in the rear od the spring, so the easiest thing to do would be to install a shackle reverse kit designed for a 4wd truck and then install the required hangers on the frame. The truck will not know the differece, and it will be ready for a solid axle. You can achieve this for around the 300 dollar range. Stock springs willdo the trick, and this thing will be pretty high. High enough to clear some meaty rubber. The rest is just steering, and then connecting some custom driveshafts.
The axles dont know or care what type of case that turns the driveshafts, so no, you wont have to change the rear axle if you dont want to.
Regular old lift springs or lift method for the rear will have you level again, and this is about it.
You will have to be good with a tape measure and have enough skill to weld when necessary, but this shackle reverse kit is probably the easiest way to convert the 2wd to 4wd.

So the shackle reverse kit that I install will have the shackle in the rear and the hangar up front?
