94 F350 Transmission Leak Help

Can someone tell me if I should buy or stay away from a truck I am looking to purchase. The owner says that at times the truck will blow out about 1/2 quart of tranny fluid through small tube near oil pan. The truck is 94 F350 Diesel 4x4 crew cab. Is this normal or not. Thanks, Randy <!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->

Revitt,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

I am not much of an automatic tranny guy, but I can tell you it is not normal.

In a bit one of the guys that know E4OD trannies better will be along and can give you an idea what is wrong.

IT's most likely been getting overheated when pulling heavy in traffic. Weather or not damage has been done is hard to say, but it most likely needs an external tranny cooler.
If you really like the truck, whittle the price down far enough to cover the better part of a tranny

The front torque convertor seal can leak if heavy towing was done..... it can sometimes reseat itself and be fine for a long time. The trans would need to be R&Rd to repair it, the 94 trans was updated to be better than earlier year E4ODs, but if it must come out think to have it checked for most recent applicable UPGRADES reqiured not just rebuilt.

the front seal is damaged due to being overheated
could be from abuse or from a torque converter clutch that is slipping and causing it too overheat it does have tocome out
the only mod you need to do is a pump modifictaion kit from superior transmission it will correct tcc apply and correct lube circuit issues also

Is that the one they call a Pump Correction Package part K062 ?
and should that thing be put into any of them that have a leaking front seal?

thats it the only thing i dont recommend is using the bushing they furnish in the kit it requires modifying the bushing bore and the bushing is a babbit material which isnt hard enough to support the converter hub for it use a factory style bronze bushing

Thanks. It looks like I'll be picking up a gasser with a bum front seal on the tranny, so this is very handy, and timely information

Something else I wonder is if it already overheated once or twice, there may be other internal issues. A partially blocked cooler might be causeing the overheating, but what got into the cooler to cause the restriction? Might be as simple as a kinked line, but the risk is that internal parts are tearing up.

Heres the pump kit that was mentioned:
4L60E, 700R4, 4L80E, 4R100, E4OD, 2004R, C6, TH350, TH400 Transmission: SUPERIOR E40D PUMP CORRECTION PACKAGE

I wonder what years this kit best applies to. My book shows changes to orifice holes that were intended for 1989-1991 models to increase the flow of some holes in those years of transmisison pumps (among other changes).

i dont know what book you are referring to but the early pumps are replaced by the late pumps
in all the years i have worked on them there was never an orifice difference unless you are referring to the modulated tcc pumps versus the non-modulated tcc pumps
and the kit works on all models of the E40D plus the 4R100

ATSG update book for E4OD/4R100 transmission.

But you answered my question if the kit works on all years of tranny, thanks. I was wondering if the later versions of pump already had the orifice holes drilled out to the larger size but I guess they don't.
