I got the 390 into the truck two days ago, and have over 90 miles on it now. So far so good. Here's the build- not quite as exciting as maxtor's new 434 but I'm still stoked
d3 block bored .060, decked, squared, line-bored,
balanced with kb150 pistons, arp rod bolts
crane 343942 cam and lifters
3 angle valve job with compcams valve springs, really minor ex port work
performer rpm intake
1850 holley
unilite dizzy
still waiting on headers- stock manifolds w single exhaust for now.
My only hang up is that I have a light clattering noise at idle when its up to full operating temp. sounds kinda like my foreman's idi diesel or a mechanical valvetrain at stoplights. Anybody have their rockers dry out at idle with the #90 holley jet restriction in the cyl head? My inclination at this point is to keep running it through the break in. Maybe its just a characteristic of this build. Definately not like a rod knock, piston slap, or lifter noise. Any thoughts or reassurances are greatly appreciated.
Don't like the sound of it at all. A warning is a warning. Put as little load on it as possible until it's been resolved/proven trouble free. R&D is in order IMO..hope it works out ok., lots of work goes into a decent FE and only slightly more into a jewel.
Pull the valve covers and re-check your valve train for coil bind, pushrod length, valvestem wear patterns and hold down bolt torque.Keep us updated,I`m building two FE`s myself.A 390 stroked to 436 and a 428 from a T-BIRD
All our builds are fun and exciting.
I agree with the prior advise, to look at your valve train. Along with the other listed problems, you could look for a collapsed lifter.
I had a word with one of the techs here that worked for ford in the early 80s, and with my machinist. We're going to start with pulling the restrictors back out of the heads. If that doesn't fix it we're going to look into +.060 pushrods or adjustable rockers. This makes the most sense to me, it sounds like an engine with a mechanical valvetrain. fyi for anyone with a '73 and up with factory air. The cast aluminum cobra valve covers look really cool, but are not worth it if you have to take one off after the engine's in!
