I posted this in the 73-79 forum but thought it should go here.
I have a 78 F150 460/4x4 with a 9" rear w/3.50 gears. I have a small crack in the axle housing where the carrier bolts on so I want to replace the axle tube. I put in a mini spool, replaced the pinion seal and axle bearings, and a few other things so I don't want a whole rear end. My questions are:
Are all the axle tubes the same for the 9" in the 73-79 era?
Does it matter if I have 28 or 31 spline axles?
Are the axle bearings the same size?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Sep-02 AT 12:47 PM (EST)]Is the crack in the 3rd member or the case? If the case is cracked why not replace just the case? You want to replace place the axle tubes? I don't get. More information please.

Sorry. My book calls it the axle housing but some refer to it as an axle tube or case. The crack is in the case/housing/tube between two of the studs that hold the 3rd member on. It extends down below the level of fluid and drips a drop every few weeks. I'm afraid it might get worse when I pound the heck out of the truck on the trails.
