Well I've done like Edlebrock has mentioned just use the rtv and now with about 800 miles on the motor it has developed an oil leak at the rear of the motor. Yup oil has made it's way some how through is rtv seal. I had cleaned with a some #400 sandpaper & acetone even. And it has still failed. I'm trying a band aide fix for the moment on the back. If the front starts leaking, then the cork seal is going in..One trick to help hold the seal in place is to use a center punch about every 1/2-3/4" along the matting surfaces. then using a 1/16" drill a small hole along this area so the seal will have more bite or footing to help hold it. Well that's my story an stick-in to it.. my 2cents
orich
Are you talking about it squeezing out? If it's squeezing out, that's good. You should have a nice light, even squeeze out. Be sure to use enough gasket maker. But don't use too much, because what squeezes out of the block can also squeeze out on the inside causing problems. I use some gasket maker called Right Stuff. It comes in an aresol can like cheese whiz. Put the intake on and check the gap between the block and intake front and back. This will tell you how much gasket maker to apply. Be sure to get those corners good too.
Hey guys thanks for the responses. To answer the questions I have center puched the mating surface I didn't do it to the intake just the block. When I put the rtv in we did infact have squeeze out pretty equal all the way around too. I used some rtv from my local napa store the black high temp sealent hoping this would work but it seems to have failed. I do have a pcv setup that I believe is working espically since it has a new pcv valve now and a new vac port that I hooked up to on the edlebrock carb I now have. hope this helps. if there also is any way to test the pcv let me know please.
Ever notice the difference between "plain" RTV and the stuff that smells like dirt that used to say "O2 sensor safe" or that it's OK with gasoline?
Whenever oil contacts RTV, it gets REAL slippery.
I've always used the stuff that smells like dirt, and never had a problem. Have used "plain" RTV in other places, the stuff that smells like vinegar, and had problems.
Use the Motorcraft TA-31 RTV - it comes in a caulk tube from the Ford dealer. Very good on oil - its intended to service the 6.5/7.3 diesel engines. Its gray and sets up nearly like plastic. Very high solids.
Be careful with the ARP bolts - the intake ones are often too short for some of the manifolds. Check for at least 1/2" of good thread engagement before putting any tighteness to them - or you risk pulling threads. Ask how I know....?
