4R44E 150K Service Specs. ???
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Sep-02 AT 00:19 AM (EST)]Anyone know why a service brochure I picked up at a Ford dealer service dept. states the 4R44E Trans. does not require service (under "normal" operating conditions) until 150,000 miles? My owners manual calls for 30,000 miles (normal AND "special"\severe) for several other transmissions, but makes NO mention of the 4R44E. The brochure includes the 5R55E in the 150K interval as well - I am seriously curious. Thanks - Glenn . . . PS also - I'm still confused about the "44" and "55" designations on these units - I know the first number being "4" or "5" refers to 4 or 5 speed - but what the heck is a 4R-"55"-E - is it possible or could it be that this is an "off-road" 4X4 trans? I'm trying to determine what I got so I might maintain it properly - and save a buck where I can (or spend `em if I have to). My truck does have a factory "Sport" decal - is this supposed to be telling me anything? A print-out I got from Ford lists my Trans as "4R44|55E ??? Thanks again ...

4R44E 150K Service Specs. ???
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Sep-02 AT 01:23 AM (EST)]unknown why the "experts" at ford would say that anything they built can go 150k without a service. I service my transmission every summer before the big trip. this works out to about to a 15-20k service interval.
the 4r44/55e, 4= speeds, r=reverse, 44/55= 440/550 foot pounds of torque capacity, e=electronic
the 5r55e, 5=speeds, etc.
I believe that the 44 is behind the 2.3 and the 55 is behind the v-6's.
hope this helps,
Jim

4R44E 150K Service Specs. ???
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Sep-02 AT 00:29 AM (EST)]Thanks man, it helps - I think (?) PS Jim, I read on another site the 44E was on the 4-bangers and the 3.0 sixes and the 55E on the 4.0, though this info only covered up to `97 models - do you know if maybe they switched 3.0's to the 55E after `97, or could they have at least maybe switched SOME ("Sport" or off-road packages) 3.0's to the 55E? Thanks in advance - Glenn . . .

Unknown, you would have to contact ford on that one. as a ford tech, it is like pulling teeth sometimes to get information out of ford even for us. you should not have any troubles with the trans you have. Just watch the heavy towing.
