The truck's out and running great, but it seems to be running extremely rich.
I have the mixture screws adjusted on my carb close to what "they say" should be correct. (2 turns out)
The carb I'm running is a Holly 6619-1 2177 (model #4160) 600 cfm.
I turned the mixture screws all the way in (to the right), and then back out 2 full turns (to the left). (this is on a 390 v8)
Like I said it's running fine, but very exausty. Like eyes burning exausty/gassy. Any ideas on how to clean it up a bit. I know they say to richen it, turn it 1/4 turn, and I've tried it the opposite to lean it out, but not getting much results.
Not an authority, just rebuilt the 4160 (1850) 4bbl 600cfm. On the 1850 there are 2 mettering needles on both sides of the primary fuel bowl. What I do is start the engine and lean the adjusting needle until the engine rpm just begins to drop, then richen or turn the needle the other direction about 1/4 turn. Same procedure for both sides. Keep in mind any adjustment in mixture may influence the timing so may want to do both at same time. Also, leaning or richening mixture may influence the adjustment on the accelerator pump but suggest not messing with it, it's preset, and unless there's a surge, or lack of, during the initial accerleration then best leave well enough alone. Sometimes a shot of carb cleaner down the primary mixture horn, and intake will remove any carbon deposits. Anyhow, had an urge to chime in and add my
I too had this same problem until I change to one range hotter plug, replaced the points with electronic pick-up and coil, advanced the timing 2 degrees, now everything smells right, quicker response on the throttle and smooter idle once warmed up.
