I was looking for opinions, the carpet in my truck is pretty bad off. it has holes in it and stained from the previous owner. i wanted to see about replacing it finally along with repairing the droppy headliner.
anyone have anything good or bad to say about any particular carpet kit? i dont care to pay $1000 for new carpet, but i also want it to hold up. i'd like to fix up the inside so it will hopefully last a long time (at least another 12 years).
o yea... i know this has nothing to do with the carpet but i dont think it warrants starting a whole new thread.
does anyone make cab roof lenses that are clear without buying the whole kit? i dont need all the wiring and lights themselves. i would just like to find someone who sells just the clear lenses

any ideas? comments? suggestions? tips? opinions?

ive never seen carpet for any vehicle cost more than $200, so i would expect it to be somewhere in that price range. if it was me i wouldnt bother trying to repair the headliner. its much easier and looks a lot better to just replace it. when one falls its generally because the pad has dry rotted. if you just try to spray it and stick it back up there the adhesive will more than likely soak through since the pad is thinner. even if it doesnt soak through you will still have low spots where there is less padding than the area around it. replacing the headliner is a simple job and worth doing right. if you need any tips on installing one just let me know.

yea i have heard that its best to pull the whole liner down, remove the fabric and start fresh. i am open to ALL ideas and comments... thats why i posted here to get some adivice from those who have been there and done that!
i would like to use a different fabric since what i has is pretty dingy and has some stains on it (believe it or not! lol). although i guess if i pull it down i could wash it on delicate in the washing machine lol
i was going to PM you but i figured someone else could use this info!

i wouldnt even bother trying to wash it. after so many years the glue starts eating away at the padding and the heat dry rots it and if you try to wash it you will lose most of the padding and be left with a very uneven surface.
first pull the entire headliner/backing out of the truck and get as much of the old headliner off as you can. then take a wire brush and scrub off the remaining pad/adhesive. this gives you a level surface and scuffs up the backing so that the new adhesive will bond better. lay the new headliner on the backing and let it sit in the sun for a while. this will help it form to the new shape and fit the creases better. dont try to spray the entire backing all at once and then lay the headliner on it. fit it into place and lift up a few inches on one end and spray that part of it. apply gentle pressure to get it to stick. let that dry and then you will have something to hold it in place while you spray the rest of the backing. work your way from one end to the other being sure to apply gentle and even pressure. if you push down too hard you can cause the adhesive to be sucked up into the foam and you will be left with either a permanent hand print or a hard spot on the new liner. dont lay anything heavy on it to hold it down while it dries either. when you get to a crease, make sure you fit the crease before doing the section on the other side of it. if not, it will be stretched too tight and your creases will not stick and you will be left with another droopy, but cleaner, headliner.
ever thought of tearing out the old carpet and just spraying bedliner down on bare metal? thats just an idea for you to play around with. but then again i dont know if there are any wires running along the floor.
what about a rubber matt? no more stains and alot easier to vaccume.
i know JC whittney sells carpet kits for a good price.
u got my .2 cents worth.... hope i gave ya an ideer.
Mitch
thanks ive had to fix a lot of headliners where friends mess them up trying to put them in and then bring them to me lol. did you move recently?? your sig used to say erwin but now its johnson city. you were looking for a house a while back, so i wasnt sure if youd found one or not.

i dont think there are any wires under the carpet from the factory, but i have seen instances where installers have ran wires for aftermarket stuff like camper top lights, speakers, etc, under the carpet. if there are wires under the carpet, and if he wants a spray in liner, the easiest thing to do is just relocate the wires under the door sill plate. im with you on that one though. i dont like carpet in a truck if im going to do any kind of work in it.

Yup I found a home. It is between Johnson City and Jonesborough but the address is J.C. I am glad to finally settle down again. Living in a camper for a year is not all it is cracked up to be.
Thanks for asking.

i hear you on that one. we had 4 of us living in about a 20 footer for 6 months until we found a house. thats not something i ever want to do again..... congrats on finding a house though.
When I got my truck the carpet was in real bad shape so the first thing I did was rip it out.
Cutts I know your familiar with this cause your into wheelin, but I herculined the floor. I took my time did a good job prepin everything, and a year later it started to show alot of wear on the drivers side.
I ended up ordering some stuff from JC whitney, its the plastic floor liner, kind of like what the XL models come with. I didn't want carpet.
Installation was pretty easy, take everything out (not much in mine, its reg cab), and the piece of flooring they sent me did need some trimming for the 4x4 shifter and I needed to cut it to size, I think it was a universal piece for regular and extended cabs.
I also had to cut holes for the mounting bolts for the seats, but overall its was easy.
if you go the bedliner way its not like its hard to do touch up work. clean it out roll it on let it dry. also a good rust preventor. wonder if it would help soundproof the cab at all?
Mitch

Mine didn't, actually I thought it was louder inside the cab with it. At least with the carpet, they usually give you something to lay down between the carpet and the floor to help sound proof
lay the new headliner on the backing and let it sit in the sun for a while. this will help it form to the new shape and fit the creases better. dont try to spray the entire backing all at once and then lay the headliner on it.
i am assuming that i need to buy a headliner replacement kit? and what kind of adhesive do i need to use? just the 3M spray stuff?

yea i have done the bedliner thing to one of my older trucks and it was great cause i could rinse the inside out. however i want this truck to look good, and i dont mind spending a little more for it. it just looks so bad right now. i thought about the thick plastic liner that replaces the carpet but how does it look?
thanks for all the input guys
and Neal, congrats on finding a new place. i just recently purchased a home myself, taking advantage of the interest rates (4.6%!!!) and economy! my truck doesnt fit in the new garage esp with the bronco there but a shop out back will fix that, lol
