Some opinions, if you please.

I'd like to research a new exhaust system for my 2002 F-250 5.4L. Is there a combination out there that offers a little more torque and gas mileage without being too loud? I'm interested in a nice rumble, not an ear-splitting explosion. Thanks!

I have the Flowmaster Super 44 with 3" pipe and 4.5" stainless steel tip exiting in stock location.

The truck seems to like it, and it's got a nice rumble with out that raspy loud glasspack sound. I tried several setups and like this one the best.

 

flowmaster and jba get my vote. i have used both and they have great sound with minimal cab noise. don't go gibson. the cab noise will give you a headache.

 

If you're just going 'cat back' make sure that you remove the two restrictions near the y-pipe. A guy on ebay sells a nice piece that will fit right up. If you're going complete exhaust from the manifolds...you've already got it covered.

I love my Magnaflow. A nice low rumble down low that almost disappears in the high RPM's, and little to no interior noise. Sadly, I may be ditching it for something louder. I want my truck to have some real bark to it. I know it just ain't possible, but I want her to sound something similar to a Cobra with SLP Loudmouth exhaust.

 

What size Magnaflow muffler are you running? My neighbor across the street has a late model F150 with 5.4L engine. He installed a 11" or 12" Magnaflow muffler only and his truck is loud and sound's great! I love the sound of Magnaflow!

 

It's a 3" SI/SO and I believe it's an 11". Great sound, but not as loud as I'd like it to be. Maybe it's due to my uber restrictive stock Y-Pipe or cat, but I'm not sure.

 

Good point, I didn't pay attention to the year model of the OPs truck. That factory Y-pipe is junk. Just me mindfull of the basic physics of exhaust, scavenging is key. I still would like to see someone try... Zoomers Exhaust Works - Performance Exhaust Systems, Exhaust Tips, and Cat-backs
In theory, these should be outstanding.

 

That Zoomers muffler looks like you can take it apart to access the core.

 

My neighbor's exhaust dumps in front of the right rear tire. His is a SI/DO muffler. Maybe that makes a significant difference. He said that was the only thing that he installed (no cat removal or headers).

I believe you are correct. Magnaflow makes a complete SI/DO 3" kit for the F150 with dual tips exiting in front of the passenger's rear tire like you stated. A kid at my school has it on his OBS F250 w/ 5.8L (I think), and it sounds alot louder than my system.


On the topic of Y-Pipes, I thought I saw one somewhere that was a complete bolt-in, all the way up to the flanges that bolt to the manifolds.

 

Maybe not. I couldn't find it on fleabay or anywhere else for that matter. I have a hard time believing the claimed +33HP that the SDP Y-pipe adds.
