I have a 78 shortbox 2wd with a 429 (originally a 400) C6, and what i think is the original rearend with 2.72:1 gears. I want 4.11 or 4.56 and need to know if my rearend is a 9 inch or not. I have the original tag but some numbers are to beaten to read, the ones I can read are ?017 av 4f4 ???? 9(i think) 318a. If this is any help???!!! Any help is appreciated!

Does the rear end have a center section that is bolted to the housing in the front? Does it have a rear cover that is bolted on? If you answer yes to the 1st question and no to the second, you most likely have a 9" rear, which is what should be in the truck. I believe that's what the "9" on your tag refers to as well.

yes it does bolt on in the front, no there is no removeable cover on the back and i thought that was what the 9 stood for, but i was not totally sure. thanx for your help.

From the tag i would say you have 3:18 gears!
