96 F250 7.3 4x4, gauges, BB, 6637.................my truck runs real well but I've got a question...............sometimes when I take off from a dead stop the truck will IMMEDIATELY wind up and run like a Striped _ss Ape and sometimes it just plugs along.............you can really tell the difference......it appears to me that sometimes the turbo kicks in immediatley and sometimes it doesn't........I would think it should either act one way or the other all the time.......anyone with any ideas.
No I didn't get a boost gauge when I bought the gauges..........at some point I am going to buy one.......but you think it may be the back pressure valve.........how do you get to it.
right on the ex. side of the turbo there is a butterfly valve. you can remove the turbo the down pipe and then the BPV housing and gut it all out or you could first try unplugging it. look for the wires going into the turbo base and just undo the conection.
I would unplug it first and see if that help.
I have the same problem with my 94 PS. Sometimes it runs just fine and sometimes it doesn't. It seems boost related. I'm sure it's not the ebpv. I know that sound. I don't hear the turbo at times though. My 97 turbo just screams when I'm pulling something and feels almost like it's a blower instead of a turbo. It's weird.
I put a boost gauge on the 94 last week but I haven't noticed the power fall off since I did it yet. So far the max boost I've seen is 17 or 18 while pulling a hill with the pedal on the floor in 4th. Normally on the highway in 5th it's around 3-5 or so at 65. It creeps up to about 7 to 10 on hills when it's unloaded and going on the cruise control. It sounds normal to me pressure wise but it sure doesn't sound like my 97 at all.
When was the last time you changed you fuel filter? Almost sounds like you could be starving it for fuel at take off.
Any smoke when she doesn't quite spool up?
Have you inspected your compressor wheel?
Could be your valve cover wiring harnesses that may be a little melted making them touchy sometimes. Just look at them visually and un-hook them and make sure they are not melted.
May not be the solution, but it will hopefully narrow things down.
