crank to cam timing " 6 oclock amd 12 oclock

bbf 460 . melling double roller chain, elgin pro stock cam. when i put the crank at 12 and the notch on the cam gear at 6 it makes the exaust lifter open when the piston goes down . when i put the cam gear notch at 12 and crank at 12 the intake lifter rises when piston goes down which is what i want right. i am no newby but everything i have read says 6 and 12.

Dusten...they're both right. If you put the cam gear notch at 12 and the crank gear at 12, then turn the crank 1 full revolution, you'll end up with the crank at 12 and the cam at 6. (Cam turns 1/2 crank speed)

You can't do it wrong. (I'm open to correction here)

It depends which cylinder you're looking at. They're all doing different things at any one particular time.

ok i got it.i was looking at the right cylinder. i started troubleshooting at the the start and determined the cam to be the wrong one, it was an accidental swap of the wrong box. got the right one and worked great. although i couldnt even imagine what the other one would have been ground for. logic would state that as long as the crank is at 12 it doesnt matter if the cam is at 6 or twelve. cuz the crank dont know what stroke its at, its the cam that tells whats up!!!! i think lol

Glad you found your problem. You have it right...it doesnt matter whether the cam's at 6 or 12, because eventually, its at both.

Just curious, any idea what the applcation was for the wrong cam?
