have you gone and tapped that motor yet? take ya 5 seconds, and I can guarantee you 99% of the time, this is the problem
and don't be afraid to give it a good solid whack

and no, there are several distinctly different processes that the PCM and the t-case must communicate to each other during the shifting process.

any failure during that process, and no 4x4

You need to check connections with a multi-meter before rewiring. If the solenoid motor is shot, to the point that a hammer doesnt work. It wont matter how many wires you re-run to the motor. You need to eliminate the motor as the problem before you go any further. Check the wires for the motor, at the motor to see if they are ok. Then move on from there.

I am new to this site so bear with me. I am having the same problem. I heard the grinding noise from the front left and now the 4x4 is not working. I changed the IWE solenoid and still nothing. The 4x4 lights do not come on and the 4x4 is not working.

jnick, if you hear a grinding noise up front and your 4x4 isnt engageing, i think you might have a vacuum leak somewhere in the IWE system.

Well it depends what the conditions were when you disconnected the solenoid.

Sorry to hijack this thread.

Jnick-could you start a new thread for this problem if needed, thanks!

Well i think that would be normal because of the series of check valves and the vacuum box. But im not 100% on that. It could hold vacuum in the supply line and box from the first check valve to the solenoid. And the release you heard might have been that.

Would this take the tranny outta gear in a 5 speed and sound like it's spinning freely?

I didn't get a light on the dash and it was my IWE. However, when trying to engage 4wd it would stick in either low or high whichever I went to first and not disengage, then the IWE sounded like a chainsaw.

Don't just bypass anything. You run the risk of screwing more things up or being stuck in 4wd hi or low. Figure out why and fix it properly.

I'm guessing at 15 days later, it was the motor and it got replaced.

I have the same problem with not seeing the light. I'm also having the problem of it seeming like the transfer case is in neutral and I have to hit 4x4 button for it to kick back in. I have 94 ranger by the way
