FWD cars have not "caught on" with California law enforcement fleets, even up here in mountain snow country. The Crown Vic is still 90+%. I have seen quite a few Tahoe's but not many Chargers. Chrysler "owned" the police business in CA during the 1960's and 1970's. The 1969 Polara was the fastest CHP vehicle ever.

Dad told me stories of regularly outrunning Nash cop cars with his Ford in the late 1940's.

I had a state trooper tell me that the Chevy Malibu's they used didn't hold up when they were used to cross the grass median on the interstate highways when going to pursue a speeder.

The full framed Vic's shined in this area, not to mention more room on the inside.

Also, no matter how fast a vehicle is, they can't out run a Motorola!

I've noticed in this area, the Staties still have pretty much all crown vics and the local PD's have everything but.

Locally, I've seen Intrepids, Chargers, Cherokees, Durangos, and Impalas used as police vehicles. Probably even a Jeep Liberty or two.

I've noticed a lot more 4WD police vehicles in this area, presumably due to winter demands and the sort of terrain around here.

One of the officers here doesn't need 4WD. She has been known to follow dirtbikers/four wheelers into the woods - with her crown vic.

Reminds me of the scene in 'First Blood' where Sheriff Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy)
is chasing Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) who's on a dirt bike, in his police car, then rolls the car.

What kind of winters and terrain do you have? The CHP and Sheriff get along fine up here above 6000 ft and some of the steepest terrain in the US with mostly Crown Vics. There was an off-road rescue of some hikers stranded in the snow a few days ago. They used a helicopter. No 4x4 would have helped anyway.

I was talking to a state police officer a while back, he was saying that they got into a highway chase, the Chargers left the crown vics 10 miles behind.

Still, that means more retired crown vics for sale.

I agree with the post about the 69 dodge HP car.I forget just how fast they went but I met an old school mountain county policeman once and asked what was the fastest car he ever had and he said it was a 1975 full size LTD and he got it to almost 140....Thats rollin for mountain roads.

Your vehicles go faster than 186,000 miles per second? Cool!
