77 460 and C-6 5th wheel puller
Well it looks like I will be getting my 460 and C-6 from a fellow list member, better then that I will be getting the whole truck. It is a 77 F250 2x4.
1. What do I need to do to this motor to make it ""pull!!!!""" my 15,000 lb 5th wheel trailer? I mean down low, 70 mph on the interstate, up the mountains etc.. I want my cake and to eat it too.
TIA

William, I always thought the 390 in my old '70 was a strong puller with 3.50 gears. But last summer I got a '78 F150 supercab with a 460. I couldn't beleive how much more power the 460 has! I need to change my gears, though. I've only got 2.75's. I think 3.50's or 3.73's would be ideal for what I tow. For what you're towing, I thing mabye a good 4bbl setup, duals, and 4.10's or 4.56's would be fine. Don't forget, with today's gas prices, dual tanks and a fat wallet is also needed. :-)

If your 5th wheel weight is "15,000 lbs." the Ford owners guide recommends a 4.63 gear (up to 16,000 lb. trailer).
I tow a 9,000 lb. car trailer and was not happy till I added headers, dual exhaust, RV cam, K&N Filter. I still slow down to 50 MPH on the long steep grades with my 3:55 gearing.
Since you'll be towing an additional 6,000 lbs. I can only see about 4 possibilities:
1. Put in the 4:63-5:13 gears and add an after market overdrive ($2,600 plus/minus).
2. Supercharge ($3,000 plus/minus)
3. Trade your truck in for a Turbo-Diesel...I'm not a diesel lover but very heavy loads and steep grades is where they make up for their steep initial cost (diesel option $5,000 plus/minus).
4. Trade down to a lighter trailer/5th wheel.

77 460 and C-6 5th wheel puller
The latest Hot Rod mag has an article on a 57 Merc station wagon. The guy put in a 460 (8.2 compression ratio) with two turbos out of T-Bird super coups (junkyard). It says he has $3000 in the motor, gets 10-12 mpg with 3-1 r&p, and get this, 355 HP and ****714 lb ft torque**** at 2200rpm!!!! Talk about a puller!! That could almost ****** a Powerstroke in half!!
Anyone have a couple turbos they want to get rid of?!
