77 F150 Supercab 8ft bed as a puller?

Hi
My truck is as follows. 1977 F150 Supercab, 8 ft bed, 155 inch wheel base, 400/C6, 9 inch rear 3.00 gear. This is a Southern truck with low miles, excellent condition no rust or rot. I will be refreshing the C6 and I can change the gear to what ever I need.
I will be purchasing a fifth wheel to pull and I am curious on a couple of things.
1. Is an older F150 more of a substantial truck for pulling as compared to a new F150 is since it is heavier and larger? ( I ask this because the salesman said a F150 may be too small to pull a 27 foot fifth wheel but he wasn't aware I had an older truck.)

2. Can modifications make this truck safer with a large fifth wheel on it's hitch, such as brakes, leaf spring replacement, front coil, etc.

3. Other than axels, brakes and springs does an F250 have other distictions that make it a better truck for pulling such as a heavier frame?
Thanks , Joe

Your 150 may pull the trailer OK but I would be worried about stopping it. Should the trailers brakes ever malfunction, the 150s brakes may not be up to the task. The older trucks seem to take heavier loads better, but the brakes arent usually any better. I would think about finding a 250 frame and drivetrain to put your body, motor and trany in.

I agree with Nathan. You'd be putting your family and other people on the road at great risk...get a F250 as a minimum. Your F150 will not cut it!

The first guy is right your truck will pull it and take the load easy but you need to upgrade your breaks and also any trailer over 5,000 lbs should have breaks on the trailer.

The older trucks I like better for hualing much better suspention and more powerful gas engines although your rear end is 3.00 you should be able to hual your trailer easy just get your breaks upgraded I think it costs 800 bucks it is worth it. I am not sure you may have great breaks but usually older trucks lack stopping ablity.

Good luck and you don't need a F-250 a newer F150 would not work but your truck will do the job just fine.
