I have replaced the Idler pulley, first time I just replaced the bearing, 2nd time I replaced the pulley and bearings. Questian is each time I replaced it, the washer that goes with the bolt that holds it on would start to squeak after tighting the bolt. I replaced the washer with one off my parts van, now it is squeaking again. The washer was a cone shape washer, is there something special that I should know about this washer? Or do I need some special washer from Ford?
A lot of times the sqeaking was blamed incorrectly on the idler pulley, in my own experience. Take off the belt and clean all the grooves and flat surfaces of other pulleys with brake cleaner and a brush. Dirt and grimes do collect there and that might be the root cause of the squeals.
I seem to recall a somewhat conical washer; you have to install it with the concave side out, or its edges will scrape the pulley. It is torqued against the center hub of the bearing. This is fuzzy memory, so you should look closely at the washer when you install.

I think you are right, I will check that when I get home. Thanks

The 2004 ranger I have had the same problem . The bolt was slightly bent
and caused uneven rotation.
The washer is similar and it can become worn allowing it to slip.
The dealer recommended I replace them as a bolt/pulley set each time so no wear is on either part...... It
could be a solution.
