Before I bought the truck I was looking to build myself an awesome gaming rig.
It was going to cost approximately 3500 dollars. My truck cost 7300. The truck took priority.
I game a lot so I was looking at a 1TW PSU, one 15,000rpm 80gb hard drive, one 1TB hard drive, a Q9450 45nm processor, Asus Striker II NSE ATX mobo, dual EVGA GeForce GTX280 SuperClocked edition, and 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM.
All that was going to be thrown in a SilverStone case. Black with green lighting and a clear side panel.
And it was going to be water cooled rather than air cooled. Air cooling isn't terribly effective past a certain point. Of couse it only works on desktops and isn't exactly cheap.
I still plan on building an awesome rig like that someday, but for now the truck takes priority. It won't be obsolete in 5 years and it can help me make money rather than just costing me money.
I didnt know that Don. Dave I agree with you on the laptop vs desktop. The laptop is way more portable.
Laptops are more portable, but most people don't move them off the desk.. You pay more for less with a laptop.. If you don't need portability stick with a desktop..
While laptops are nice and everything a desktop is better for performance on the cheap.
You can continually upgrade a desktop for a reasonable amount of money with relative ease. A laptop's components are more expensive and harder to replace. (From what I've been told. Never had my laptop ripped open)
I can see the reasoning though.
Laptops need more compact components and more compact = more expensive. And any time you cram a large amount of stuff in a small amount of space working on stuff in that space will get difficult.
Another thing about higher performance laptops is that they get HOT.
Not warm. They get HOT. The laptop I'm using now is decent still and was considered high performance when I got it 2 or 3 years ago. It gets extremely hot. I have to keep it on the table with the back elevated for airflow or else it will either burn me or begin overheating.
And I know that if you guys are like me and have Tim Taylor Syndrome (More power!) you will want to upgrade your machine as it gets older. (like we upgrade our trucks)
I really regret having gotten a laptop instead of a desktop. If you don't need a laptop go with a desktop. JMHO
