I was wondering what would be involved in converting a 2000 7.3, 6speed over to an auto. what parts and how hard would it be. I did a search and have not found the answer. thanks Aaron
Well it's best to try and find a truck that is already with an auto first , but switching from stick to auto or vs you need to program your ECU or switch them. I think for average guy or Mechanic it always better to buy the truck already with the auto JMOP.
Ok I figured I would have to do somthing with the ecu, I can just have teh dealer reprogram it not change it then? I would assume I will need the pedal assembly, trans, driveshafts, and ecu. Will I need the transfer case also or will mine bolt up. I am picking this truck up this week for $2500. It is a regular cab xlt 7.3 with 206,000 on it. I think I got a fair deal just not sure how well I will like plowing with the manual. I liked driving it around town the little I drove it so far though.
Most people who have a stick won't even consider this because the stick is so much better (at least according to all us handshakers).
I don't know if the transfer case would bolt up, buy you might also need to change the flywheel to get the auto in there. The dealer should be able to flash the computer for you, but I've got no idea what they would charge.
Since the stock 4R100 is not the strongest tranny known, and you plan on plowing with it, I would suggest you contact Brian down at BTS (Brians transmission shop). He can build a bullet proof auto for you, and has done some stick to auto conversions. It's a long drive, but in my opinion, it would be worth every penny to just let him do the conversion since that is the last tranny you will ever have to buy.
The floor pan is also different between the 2 rigs and has to be swapped out. Someone on another forum I frequent rolled their truck and did the auto/stick swap and said never again would they do it... lots of work involved.
If it weren't for needing the room inside when family visits I'd rather have the handshaker than the slush box myself.
