Also, even when the 5.0 computer learns about the 5.8, it will run (ok) at lower RPMs, but as you accelerate, if you actually put a fuel/air meter on there, anywhere above 2500RPM starts becoming extremely lean. This isnt life-or-death, but over time ( a couple thousand miles) this can start becoming a problem.

Yes you can use the 5.0 comp, but you won't be getting the full potential of the 5.8. Think of it as using a 289 fuel pump on a 460, it could work, but you won't be getting all you can out of the engine.

Hmmm, So if I let did the swap, and sticked with the 5.0 computer till I could find a 5.8 one, it should be alright?

5.0 to 5.8 swap

I'm putting a 5.8 out of 91 f250 in my 89 f150 . I have the whole truck so parts aren'ta problem .
The best solution I've found is to find someone with an 89 that came with the 5.8 you can use that vin number and have your computer reflashed.

Wow this was 10 years ago haha. Funny story this truck is still going strong lol. I did have to run a 5.8 ecm. The 5.0 ecm would barely run. As far as the egr he lives in Idaho so no emissions. Just capped the bottom of the egr valve and it works fine. So an ecm and the y pipe is really your only things to worry about.

The infamous swap

Hey I have been reading this and many more posts about this swap. Iím kinda new to this but Iím slowly picking it all up. I have 1990 f150 AOD 2wd that had a 302 in it and I swapped for a 351w jasper engine with ecm (no smog, no egr, no knock sensor). The mechanic I am using tried to use the flex plate that came with the new motor and he said the truck wouldnít go into gear. So me being concerned I started looking into this. I know now that ford didnít use the 5.8 to the aod except for the crown vics and from what I can tell I just need a new flex plate. I have read elsewhere that the pioneer fra205 will marry up the motor to the transmission. Is this flex plate literally all I need now or do I need a crown vic ecm or other transmission parts to swap? There are a lot of posts on this but for 80ís trucks or different set ups. I am looking for help with my exact setup. Not worried about the motor or transmission, just a daily driver that I want to work right together. Thanks!

Yes the flex plate will be different. The 302 uses a 50 oz balance flexplate and harmonic balancer while the 351w uses a 28 oz.

I was cracking up when i realised how old the posts were , ive been going through so many so fast i missed the dates.
Thanks again for all the great input

Yes, you need that Crown Vic flex plate. I'm keeping fingers crossed your mechanic didn't wipe out your tranny by using the incorrectly balanced plate off the 351...

Thanks for correct information, I ordered the flex plate and it should be here Tuesday. The mechanic isnít open today but I left a voicemail so he should get it before he tries anything. I will get it to him and hopefully everything does good!

Thanks again! Would it have damaged the pump when he tried putting it in gear and after realizing it wouldnít do anything stopping immediately?

I was hoping somebody else would chime in. From everything I read when I did my swap the transmission would be destroyed immediately after start up if incorrect flex plate was used. Hoping that's not the case with yours. Good luck!

He's correct. If the wrong Flexplate was installed and engine started, then the transmission is destroyed. The TC was pushed to far back, damaging the pump, then pump started with engine, then sent all the grinding, shrapnel through trans.

I highly doubt the transmission will even run correctly If at all. It will have to be completely dismantled, flushed, including the cooler lines and transmission cooler...EVERYTHING. Then rebuilt.

Your MECHANIC will need around $1700 to completely repair it. That includes new 4R70W internals. $1500 if you just replace what was damaged...ie valve body, TC, Pump, and clutches.

Here's another member that found out after 3 failed attempts with the wrong Flexplate. He finally got the right one and has ordered a new Monster transmission.

Update, so the transmission is shot since he started the truck and didnít have the right flex plate, he is going to eat that so he is replacing it for free as he should. Iím not mad at him since I didnít know either but it does suck. I will end up with a new motor and new transmission though, only sets me back a couple weeks from being able to drive it. I will post updates when I get the truck, thanks again everyone!

Sucks that happened but great to hear he's eating the cost. It can be hard to find a mechanic who's willing to do that and not put up a fight. It'll be worth the wait!
