what ever truck you get if you mud bog it you will want a dana 60 up front and probably a 9in or a steerling in the rear and you'll want either a spool or a detroit locker in both of them and you'll probably want a big block as well to clean the tires so you might as well start off with at least a f-250 with a bigblock either a FE (352 390 428 427 406 416 factory ci) or a 460......i LOVE FE's and you can make awesome power with them and they are the best sounding motors ever, you can get a 390 and stroke it to a 445 for about the same price as a 390 rotating assembaly if you get the stroker kit from survival motorsports.... talk to barry at survival if you want to build a FE motor..........but a 460 can get like 800hp on pump gas fairly easily and it'll take a high strung FE to make 800hp on pump gas....460 parts are also cheaper......but yeah anyway stay away from the d44 ttb front ends in a truck if it has a solid axle with leaf springs you can always swap a d60 in really easily for about 600-1000$ for parts....i would also stay away from the 8.8in rear, they have c-clips and if you break an axle you will lose your wheel unless you get c-clip eliminators and they usually leak....manual or auto is all up to you it's a matter of preferance i like autos in mud because you can shift gears without the tires losing momentum or stoping, but with a manual you can rock your truck back and forth if you get stuck with out blowing up the trans.....if you STRICTLY mud bog your truck and never use it for anything else you could run a lower numbericly gear ratio in the front to keep the front tires spinning a little faster, helps float the front tires and make the back ones bite i've heard.......and if your serious about having a mud truck you'll want to 4link it or at least put ladder bars on it because if your serious about it you'll have enough power to bust up parts pretty badly if your wheels get to hopping
wow that's a lot of typing

yeah in order to build a mud truck i would be happy with i would want at least 700hp so to get it out of a FE it would be like 6-7 grand or a 460 for about 5000-6500 then i would want a stout c6 to back it so figure about 1800 for a good trans and converter with a np205 transfer case (no idea what they run but probably no more than 500) 35 spline d60 front axle about a grand installed 35 spline 9in rear about a grand installed figure 2 grand for wheels and tires (cut 44in boggers or tractor tires) 800 for driveshafts and a grand for misc stuff like exhaust gauges shifter ect and lastly about 1500 to get suspention meaning springs and shocks+traction devices
so that puts the total at around $13,600 using a $5,000 460
i love specing out builds, wish i had the money to build something like this but for now i am going to settle with 33s and a built little 302 for my truck and a 700hp drag car that's still not finished after 5 years of working on it

slow builds are the way to go! easier to re-learn your truck between upgrades ha...like Tbird said its all personal preference for me to build a straight up bogger i would go with a mid-late 70s f250 hi-boy if possible 44" boggers with enough lift to clear em good d60 locked up front sterling locked in rear with ladder bars a built 460 with at least 500hp and a good manual tranny but that would cost alot of money which i do not have so im gonna build my 95 into a mud truck/dd so i got a d44 out of a 74 f150 to put under it with a 6" lift and 36 x 12.5 tsl radial tires and sooner or later a 9" in rear with selectable locker ...whatever you build BUILD IT PROPERLY..dont cheap out and use a hockey puck lift or a BL for that matter do it properly so it dont break

Wish it were mine.

A very good budget build would be a F250 from 67 to 77.5. You can get 35" tires on with little or no lift. 390's are still easy to find. Find a good aluminum intake at a swap meet or buy a new ED RPM. Headers and a cam will make more then enough power to spin 35's + its hard to beat the sound of a good FE wound up.
