chris i sold that merc intake as i was gonna put a 4bbl intake on her , but as usual plans keep evolving and changing so .......... instead i bought an adapter for the intake from speedway that goes from the 3 bolt to the rochester . i think my 2 jet came from a 350 olds , so we might have to change the jets . i'm not for sure as a freind had it laying around and he isn't for sure which car in his back yard it came from . denver im going to replace all the springs , the retainers , locks and keepers . they've been at it for awhile and i don't wanna find out if the rest of 'em are waiting to suprise me ! i also have to change the pan gasket as it's seeping a wee bit at the rear seal { big suprise huh ? grandpa told me they were always leaking and changing and leaking ... on his } the water pumps , and the top timing gear if not both of them . the timing gear is fine but it's still got that infernal nylon oe gear in it and i know if i don't what'll happen . eman you are so right 'bout 'em ! i don't have any inclination to ever have or drive anything other then a flatty powered truck or car . they are beaut's !!! that's why i have bought then turn around and dispose of so many others , it ain't the same !!!!!!!!! oh yeah im gonna throw a set of adjustable lifters in her too . same theory , they've been in there for awhile { the lifters } so ..............

Kevin, the 8BA I've been tearing down has the magnet stick to both the cover and intake. The other engine, has an aluminum timing cover. I'll be removing the heads the next day or so.

dude if ya wanna part with it let me know . i can get a new one through speedway , but i have this problem with being cheap , and i prefer to use the old stuff anyway . it just has more " charm " or " character " . i'll even send you mine off my flatty , the 56 years of dirt and caked and baked grease are free of charge . seen alanco has a couple of the intakes on the classifieds , but i have kinda stretched my toy budget buying the frame from dave boley and the money to drive over and get it so ..... any one need a couple 360 fe's and a big block c-6 and 4v intake from a 65 'bird 390 ?????

This thread is getting a little long for my A.D.D. so if I'm repeating something you already said or know, forgive me.
Havi--be careful when yer switching the timeing covers from the aluminum to the cast. Each on takes a different distributer. The cast takes the cast housing dizzy and the alum takes the aluminum one. The difference is in the shaft.
The aluminum (later ones) has a guide at the bottom of the shaft, below the gear to keep the shaft from wobbling. The cast didn't have this problem so the gear is at the bottom.
You can use either one (and I don't think one is any better than the other--I've had both) just make sure you're using the appropriate dizzy.

Hope I don't confuse you here. It's easier than it sounds...slim

Yes it is, I get confused real easy, lol.
I got it, and as of right now, I'll probably sit on it, no offense. A chrome one down the line, maybe, but not right now. It has 8BA/8RT and some numbers stamped into it as well.

I bought a project convertible for a "flathead guy" out of California about 10 years ago that had just undergone an engine rebuild. Took me more than a year to get the body and chassis in shape to hit the road with her. This guy had somehow fitted the later dizzy into the earlier cover by cutting off the end of the shaft.
I couldn't for life of me get it to run worth a damn. Good compression, good gas, but after it would fire up the timeing would go everywhere and I just about pulled out what little hair I had left before I finally got it figured out.
Hate to see anybody else hit his head on the open hood and lose hair over the same thing....slim
