I am trying to get my truck painted. I have two options my father who only knows how to us laquer or pay in a shop for acrilic. My main question is what is the difference in appearance and resisting rust. I am going to have it painted the original color which is a metalic blue in 1984. My father found a place that will mix the original color to factory specs. Any answers are very much appreciated. Thanks Craig

Craig,
I would pay for the 2 stage Urathane with clear coat if you are just doing a Solid color[no metalic]..
I think it will out shine and hold up better. with less maintence..
Iam NOT a paint expert...Iam just glad I had mine done with the latest stuff I could afford.
You can have all the new paint mixed to the Original color from the factory specs!

Whats the difference between enamel and acrilic paint
First of all, one good thing about acry. laquer is that if you end up with runs or dry spots, it can easily be sanded & buffed out....acry. enamel pretty much has to spot sanded & resprayed until perfect. If your your farther is comfortable with laquer & it is still available...........last time I sold paint.....laquer was already almost non existant............only because of painters preference for the newer urethanes. Here is a tip for you....a single stage urethane such as PPG's Concept or Delthane is just as forgiving as laquer...but not much more money then enamel.................because the reduction ratio is 1 to 1 to 1/2....so 2 quarts of color w/ 2 qts. hardner w/ 1 qrt. reducer(thinner) will net you 5 qts of sprayable material. Single stage urethane doesn't require clear coat.....but you have the option of clearcoating right after the last coat of color has dried a 'lil. And if you get a dry spot or run, you can sand & buff to correct..............unlike enamels.

Thanks for the information. After talking to the body shop at the dealership I work at I worked out a deal for them to paint it and I would do the body work. They are going to base/clearcoat, with three coats of clear for a resonable price. The guy who is painting it used to work on corvetts in his spare time, so he does a great job. I will send pictures in when the truck is hopefully finished in late october or early winter because I need to park my car. By the way thanks for the information again. Craig
