ok, yesterday i had to haul the wifes jimmy to trannyshop. about 75 miles. after about 50 my temp, which normally runs about 150, hit 260 on the aftermarket but showed dead middle of nornal on the dash gauge. had reddish brown fluid boiling out of the holding resivior. stopped and let it sit about 5 mins and it cooled down to about 225-230. if i kept it under 60 it stayed about 230, anyfaster it went up. dumped off the jimmy and the temp held the same empty comming home. i stopped about 10 miles out from the tranny shop, went into wallyworld to let it cool some, and added 1/2 gallon to radiator. rest of trip home it ran right on 190. now today it has been back at 140-150 for the 20 miles i have been today. Yesterdays temps were upper 70 close to 80 if that matters.
AND
my dash batt light is blinking, more when i have a trailer, but the volt gauge is showing about 14 and so does a volt meter. I have no issues with lights dimming of any sorts. does this mean my truck IS possessed like i already think it is?????????
What condition is your belt in sounds like it might be sliping under load. Alos your coollant needs to be drained flushed and filled with new coollant and a some anticavitation additive ASAP. It should be green. These angines are prone to cavitation wich will cause pin holes in the cylinder wall if the coolant is not propperly maintained.
nearest radiator shop is about 45 miles. As of right now, my truck and the caravan are our only 2 rides, hers needs the front diff rebuilt, my 4x4 needs the motor changed out, and the s-10 needs a new head minimum. Its a 4sp tranny
When your motor is dead can you turn your fan by hand you should be able to The only way for it to be locked up and never turning off is if the bearings are locked up and that ain't good for your waterpump bearings.
If the engines cold it should turn by hand with slight resistence then take and get the engine good and hot then pull over pop the hood and see if you can stop the fan with your hand if it takes the hand off its working, ok seriously pull over shut the engine off and see if you can turn the fan you shouldn't be able to. You have to drive it till its hot if you are siting still you wont get good air flow across the clutch and it may not get hot enough.
Disclamer: If any one is stupid enough to try to stop the fan with there hand they deserve to lose it. Therefore I am not lyable for any lost lims.
hey george that is how u check a gasser clutch, wrap hand in towl and try to slow it to a stop. With the temp gauge never getting above 150, would that be enough to lock up the clutch? also, it turns with GREAT resistance. it wont spin freely, and takes a large amount of force to make it turn no more than it does.
They will not turn freely I don't know how to tell you how much resistance they should have but it shouldnt lock up until around 205 and will be very noisy I wouldn't want to listen to this all the time.
I don't know if the older trucks are louder but I didn't realy think the clutch on my former truck/current boat anchor was very load, of course I also thought my striat piped exauhst wasn't all that loud.
As for the stiff ness of the clutch cold I would say as long as you can turn it by hand and it has some resistance I would say its probly ok. But as Starmilt said its kinda hard to say with out seeing it in person.
