Does anyone have window tint on the front driver and passenger windows? I just purchased a 2001 Excursion 3 weeks ago from PA and I'm waiting for my plates and registration, once I get them it's off to inspection. The front windows have a light 30% tint and I'm debating just taking it off before inspection or should I chance it and fail, then I'll have to make another trip to inspection.

If memory serves me correct 30% is too dark for the front windows. If it were me, I'd probably go for it and try it before yo go through the effort of taking off the tint, expecially if it was professionally installed.

Or you can find a "freindly" station that does inspections and they may look the other way...

Not really other than as you know the place is huge you get in and out pretty quick.

 

You can have a private inspection done by a service station for about $80, and generally speaking they are by far less **** than a state-run facility. You can also "take a chance" since it's summer and bring the vehicle to the state facility with the windows completely down. It's statistically likely that they won't power them up to test them, and to be sure you can always pocket the power window fuse for the 15 minutes it takes to go through...

But even with a valid inspection sticker, you're not allowed more than 15% tint on the front windows unless it's "factory", and any cop in the mood to torture you can and will do so if you're pulled over. Some cops even have a device they clamp onto the edge of the door glass and it measures opacity fairly precisely - and ticket accordingly. Again, if pulled over just slam both front windows down and hope the cop is after a seat belt ticket or a burnt out taillight.

 

No window tint allowed. Don't remove window fuse. they check if they work most of the time.

 

That's what I thought too, but wasn't 100% sure and didn't want to mis-speak.

 

I also checked NJMVC (No Tint on Front Windshield or front side windows) and tintcenter.com/laws/nj, same.

It just looks so good....maybe I'll try a local private inspection first and deal with the consequences if they'll overlook it. Other wise it's peel peel peel.

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN NEW JERSEY?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In New Jersey, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Windshield No tint is allowed on the windshield.
Front Side Windows No tint can be applied legally to this window.
Back Side Windows Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window Any darkness can be used.

HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN NEW JERSEY?

Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.

Front Side Windows No metallic or mirrored appearance.
Back Side Windows No metallic or mirrored appearance.

OTHER NEW JERSEY RULES AND REGULATIONS

Restricted Colors No colors of tint are explicitly banned.
Side Mirrors Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
Certificate Requirements Manufacturers of film do NOT need to certify the film they sell in the state.
Sticker Requirements No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.
Medical Exemption State allows medical exemptions for special tint. For more details about the specific terms of the exemption, consult your state law.


This was from a window tinting manufacturer, paraphrasing NJ law. Seemingly I was wrong - no tint on the front windows - period.

Regarding the "fuse trick", I've NEVER had a problem doing this. Does that mean I won't experience a problem next time? Who knows. But I personally NEVER had a problem doing this, and other minute clever things to avoid inspection failure.

Privacy facilities are worth the $80 however, depending on the kindness of the shop.

 

well, if you drive an ex police car with tinted windows, the inspection people will pass it.
