Had the Thorleys put on today. Shop had a few problems with hole alignment and an O2 bung that wasn't tapped. They did a great job on the install. Best of all for me, NO MORE FLUTTER when getting on it. It drove me crazy.
Not sure if the sound on the muffler end has changed, but under the hood has. Overall sound sounds like a CNG power transit bus. Much better to my ears than the flutter.
So, you obviously "got on it", how is the power as compared to before the install? This is something I am going to be doing in the next 30 days or so. Still deciding between Thorley's and Banks. I can worry about that later, I just want to know if the increase in power (if any) is worth the cash outlay.
Without a dyno, power increase would be subjective. Yes there is a difference in acceleration between the Stan's Y-pipe and trying to remember stock. Whether it is worth the $$ is up to you. After doing both Y-pipe mod and now headers, I would recommend doing the headers in the long run. If you cannot afford headers, I would save up for them.
On my previous post about the bung, I told Thorley about it and they responded by saying they had trouble with a vendor on tapping and they no longer use that vendor. Mine were boxed 11/2007. I have had them since Dec 2007.
Affording them isn't really the issue. My initial thought was to get the Banks powerpack. However, if I can buy a set of Thorley's for about $800, vs over $2,000 for the Banks set up. Then either piece together the rest, muffler etc. And if the Thorley's perform as well as the Banks, I might as well save a few bucks and do it that way.
Hard to tell if it's worth the $$ until you actually do it. The Thorley's, as well as Banks come with a 'Y' pipe so that extra piece won't have to be purchased either way. I am talking the comparable Thorley exhaust system, not just headers. Thorley doesn't post up any numbers that they claim you gain with their system like Banks does but I am guessing they are so close, there is no real difference.
You can get the chrome plated Thorleys for under $600. Strip off the chrome and paint them with a good header paint. (Wish I would have gone that route) I have the ceramic ones and I have to say the ceramic coating is a waste, as it peels off and bubbles in no time. Looks good the first couple of months though. Banks has a very nice setup and quality. Big thing is the Thorleys have the tri-y design which really helps the low to mid range torque. My next step for my truck is 4.30s and aftermarket diffs but I'm holding off as the economy is in the crapper.
Cheapest I have found so far on line is about $640. Not bad. That comes with the 'Y' and all that. Don't know if that's their normal setup. 218y think is the model number.
