looking to buy 3/4 diesil, crew cab, used, 4wd/2wd, street tires, with right modifications
on 4wd or 2wd, what kind of gas milage could i possibly get???

really depends, which era of diesel are you looking at? idi or a stroker? will you be towing anything? auto or manual? do you drive like a bat out of hell (honestly)?

my dads 6.9 n/a gets about 15 being driven nicely 65 mph max, but it also doesn't get drove very far very often.

 

I have seen early Powerstrokes (2wd E4OD) get 23 highway running empty. Because of the fundamentally different way diesels work vs gassers, mileage will vary more due to speed and load. That 23mpg truck drops down to 12 towing his trailer. Also, gearing is more important with diesels. 4.10's are really going to cost you if you like to cruise above 65.

You will get stunning gas mileage!
Put a five gallon can of gas in the bed of the truck and it will last 500k!

Now, diesel fuel mileage may be a little different.
My 3/4 ton ext cab short be 4wd regularly hvers at 18 or so around town and I have hit 22-23 on the highway with light loads and keeping the speed down to 60-65.
But 20 on the highway at 70+ is pretty common for me.
Pulling the camper, again depending on speed, I have done as well as 15-16 mpg of fuel.
The bottom line: PSD's have great fuel economy potential; your right foot is probably the greatest variable in the equation.

 

2002 f-250 7.3, supercab shortbed, 6 spd, 4wd, 4in lift an 35's, custom tuned ts chip, 4" turbo back exhaust, 6637 intake, yada yada other goodies. IF i'm fairly easy on the gas, driving around 50/50 hwy/city, and 65-70 mph tops, I get 18 mpg. On longer hauls, up to 20 mpg.

My dad gets about 18ish in his 07 chevy 2500hd. You really would be surprised, but they get great gas mileage.
