Lawmakers in Iowa trying to make regular diesel illegal

Curious what you guys think about the article below. It gets cold here in Iowa...I'm not sure they've thought about the specifics of how they are going to keep rigs, busses and vehicles from freezing up in the wintertime. lol

Don't get me wrong, I like biodiesel...I just don't like the idea of being forced to use it. Why not make all cars convert to ethanol, too?

Proposal asks lawmakers to require alternative fuel

Posted: March 11, 2009 06:45 AM

DES MOINES (KWWL)-- A proposal before state lawmakers would make all regular diesel illegal in the state of Iowa after July 1.
In a report by the Des Moines Register, the new bill would have farmers, over-the-road truckers, school districts with diesel buses and owners of any personal vehicle with a diesel engine required to use biodiesel, an alternative fuel, which is largely soybean-based.
Biodiesel fuel is about two and a half cents per gallon more than regular diesel.
Minnesota has a similar mandate for biodiesel.

Every gas pump I have saw in Fla states at least 10% ethanol I only buy a couple gallons a month some may differ

I can't see how they can do that. The oil co will fight it tooth and nail. Even if it did pass then the price of bio would probably skyrocket because of the additives that they would have to add so that it won't gel up.

I do not think we are running bio on a mandatory basis in MN. Unless this is upcoming. Winter would make this impossible/difficult at best.

The gas pumps are the same here...but according to the Des Moines newspaper, the stations are not required to carry it...they provide the 10% ethanol by choice. Some stations here provide both.

I wouldn't mind having access to biodiesel at all of the stations..that would be pretty neat actually. What I don't like is being forced to use it.

Yeah no kidding. My truck froze up this winter on regular ULSD with additives in it. Think of what would've happened if I had bio in my tank. At temperatures up to -35 in the wintertime...I can't see how they think this will work. Even 5 or 10% bio at those temperatures...

I can see doing this in the warmer months, say from april to september and maybe the southern states year round as long as they can keep the price down
In Fla where it could be used year round you can't find the stuff

I'd bet we're talking about a biodiesel BLEND, not B-100.

Isn't that what Minnesota did?

I believe it's like a 5% blend here in MN. Not positive, but that's the number that pops into my head...

Here is what I found under statue 239.77 in mn

Subd. 2. Minimum content.

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, all diesel fuel sold or offered for sale in Minnesota for use in internal combustion engines must contain at least the stated percentage of biodiesel fuel oil by volume on and after the following dates:
(1) September 29, 2005 2 percent
(2) May 1, 2009 5 percent
(3) May 1, 2012 10 percent
(4) May 1, 2015 20 percent

So for those of you coming through this wonderful state fill up in N.D or Wisc. especially in May

Nice find Tom. That is ok for summer but this winter could be interesting. Good luck in Iowa Lisa!
