Cobra JeT Heads Or Not

Can anybody give me some information on the heads with casting numbers below:

Under the valve cover – 9H3
Next to the exhaust ports – D00E-R

Thanks.

the DOOE-R desinates the heads as Cobra Jet or maybe even Super Cobra Jet heads (SCJ had mechanical cam and CJ had hydraulic). Valves should be 2.25" intakes and 1.74" exhaust. 77cc combustion chambers and intake and exhaust ports you could pass a tennis ball through.

The best factory performance heads available.

the 9H3 is the date code of when they were cast. not 100% sure on deciphering but i think it means Aug 3, 1969 they were cast.

anything else?

I had a 70 429 CJ engine that I rebuilt. mcdonaldm is correct, both had these heads. CJ had a hyd cam, iron intake and Qjet carb. Some early ones had 4 bolt mains. The rocker arm studs were a "positive stop" design for the hyd lifters. SCJ had alum intake and Holly carb (dont recall what size---780 I think) and mechanical cam, with 4 bolt mains. The rocker studs were designed to be fully adjustable for the solid lifters. A close look at the rocker studs might be one way to tell. The positive stop design had a slight shoulder where the threads stopped down on the stud. The adjustable ones had the threads stop with no shoulder. If you happen to have an old SVO catalog laying around, a picture of each is shown.

My opinion is that unless you are going to turn lots of rpms and gearing, they are too big, no velocity. For heavier stuff, a set of DOVE heads from a car migh be more satisfying. It is a similar problem to having 4 bbl heads on a 351C---which BTW looked almost the same as the 460's. My opinion and .75 might get you a cup of coffee

My 429 CJ block did not have 4 bolt mains. That is consistent with the section "The 385 Family" in the "Ford Performance" book by Pat Ganahl. The first para under CYLINDER BLOCK says "Obviously the "good" block is the four-bolt SCJ ('70-71) or CJ ('71), which bears part number D1OZ-6010-A-----".

Since I have never had a 4 bolt block or even seen one, I will not argue the point, you may well be right. There are some on this board who dont have any faith in some of these books------Thats O.K. too . Like the SCJ 428's, I think ford put 4 bolt mains in them because of the rpm potential and the fact that they still had to warranty them, but thats only my guess.

This same book section confirmed the bit about the "positive stop" or "straight" rocker studs. That still may be a good way to tell if it was SCJ or CJ for robjs111. LOL

Sorry for the double I meant to add that this same article points out that SCJ's and some early CJ's came with guide plates as well. Unfortunately (according to this article) a "positive stop" stud identifies a CJ, but if it has an adjustable stud with guide plates, it could be either, depending upon the year.

Actually the SCJ and Boss 9 blocks where 4 bolt and the CJ might or might not be 4 bolt.
