my 1990 E250 with a 4.9L takes a long time to develop fuel pressure. I turn the key on and wait for minutes for the pump to build up enough pressure to start the truck. Any ideas? Its a new pump but the truck has been idle for a few months I thought after using it more regularly the problem would stop, but not yet.
Welcome to the forum.
The pump should only run about 2 seconds when you first turn on the key. Try cycling the key several times and see if it starts.
Usually the check valve in the pump is bad when it does this.
The thing is the truck won't start unless I let the pump run until it shuts off. So I planned on trying the fuel filter first, then look for any vacuum leaks. Does that make any sense? Last year when I couldn't figure out why the truck would stall after heating up then would start again after it cooled down my mechanic changed the electric fuel pump and the problem vanished....Bob
The pump should only run for a couple seconds and stop if you turn the key to run but don't start the motor. If the pump continues to run you have a problem, either the fuel pump relay is shorted or the circuit that turns the relay on inside the computer is shorted, and that means you need a new computer.

Hey Paul, thanks for the input but I tried starting her yesterday and the problem is gone, well I mean the fuel pump stops after a few seconds. The idle is still rough but, like I said this truck has been in motion since mid '90 and its been laid up for the winter to conserve gas....Bob
