2003 Ford F-150 Cam Synchronizer trouble (AGAIN)
Ok, its been 7 month exactly to the date that I tossed $ 750.00 to Walker Ford to repair/replace cam shaft sensor & cam synchronizer. Wouldn't you know it if this morning I could feel ALL the tell tale signs of this problem happening all over again! It happens when I'm accelerating up a small grade of road first thing in the morning and get this small knock and buck like feeling in the engine. Not wasting any time and called Walker Ford in Clearwater and made and appointment for first thing in the morning.
BUT 7 MONTHS LATER!! I'm definatley going to try to reduce what-ever the cost of this is going to be. First I've never heard of anything like this breaking but after reading this forum I can see this appears to be a MAJOR issue with Ford.
I'll keep you informed as to how I make out.
I hate Chevy but I'm starting to lean!

camshaft position sensor- what i experienced last summer
2001 F-150 4.2L
Everything was fine until 165,000 miles. Then all of a sudden, first thing in the morning at startup mine started to churp for about the first 2 seconds. Then the rest of the day no noise/problems. Then the short churp turned into a long squeal that lasted up to 1 minute. But once again, the rest of the day no noise/problems. No check engine light or codes. Truck ran fine other than that annoying noise. So i bought a new belt & installed. Same noise at startup only. Took belt off & spun all pulleys by hand & nothing. Then started it (with belt still off), it squealed like normal. Check engine/battery light came on (just because belt was off alternator). Only ran it for 5 seconds that way. Put belt back on, started again, squealed & then went quiet like normal. Hmmmm.... that was weird. Figured it was a main bearing or something major like that? Didnt know what to do- asked friends, Autozone.... nobody knew what i was talking about. Autozone scanned for codes and it came back normal, & by the time i got to their store the truck was not making the noise anymore, so they couldnt hear what i was hearing. This was turning out to be a real PITA. So i used it like normal to go to work for 1 week. Never gave me any other issues, was not towed. I gave up on trying to figure it out on my own. Then took it to a (non Ford dealer) local mom/pop shop one evening & explained to them it only did it first thing when cold in the morning at startup- so it would have to sit here overnight. They opened at 8am the next morning, they called me by 8:30am and said it was this sensor & $300 total for all the work. So i said fix it. Got it back by that evening.
No noise.

Hi, I have a 2006 F150 and got the P0340 error codes. So, about a month ago I replaced the camshaft sensor and camshaft synchronizer. I bought an aftermarket replacement from O'Reilly's for about $65. It came with both the sensor and the synchronizer. It also included the plastic cap "tool."
The Ford Dealer told me "Oh, that camshaft synchro is way down in there. Takes at least 4 hours, maybe 5 hours, at $150/hour labor."
I read the instructions from the guys here on the forum and after about a week decided I was ready.
It was much easier than I was expecting. Within 30 minutes I had the old one out. Before you install the new one you have to make sure the crankshaft is rotated to top dead center. That was the hardest thing for me because I was laying on my back and doing it all myself. But it wasn't all that bad.
I did the whole job in 2½ hours. The truck is running great.
I hope this helps.

Just went through this. Had the serpentine belt and tensioner replaced, still occasionally squeaked. Towed a small RV 1500 miles, no problem. On the way back home, 1000 miles out, check engine light came on and stuttering began. Truck got me home and $850 Ford dollars later, everything is running well. Have 130K miles on 99 F150 XLT.
