Hey everyone,
I am having low power issues with my truck and need input.
It is a 96 psd ext cab 4x4, 6 inch lift and 35 inch tires. 3:55 gear ratio.
I am planning on doing a front straight axle swap and change my gear ratio to 4:10. It has 198000 miles and im just wondering when if it is time to change injectors these are the factory injectors. How do I tell if they are working or not? Any help would be great, I hope i gave enough info about the truck.
thanks for the help I have fixed a lot of things on my trucks and saved a lot of money because of this site.
One of the easiest ways to tell if they are still good, on the solenoid side, is to run a buzz test. It's a computer diagnostic test that fires each colenoid separately with the motor off. Weak ones need to be rebuilt or replaced. Either a mechanic or someone with the correct software can run it for you.
The buzz test is a good indicator to see if they are operating or not. It might be a good idea just to pull one out and see what condition it's in. Most of the time when people replace their injectors it's because the o-rings are shot.
These injectors can definitely last longer than 200k, but there are components inside them that do wear out. A rebuild is fairly cheap in the long run.
FWIW, IMO Buzz test is useless. My truck passed a buzz test with no injectors in it!
A Cylinder Contribution Test (CCT) will load the motor and tell you if one or more injectors isn't 'contributing' enough. Might be a place to start.
Does the truck miss at all? Loss of power could be due to plugged nozzles and/or worn internal parts.
From what I have seen, about 95% of the injectors I get through here are between 185k and 225k miles. Seems like they are due for something right around there, maybe a simple overhaul or maybe more parts worn. Especially with the older '94 - '99 trucks.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Thanks,
Jim
Thanks Guys,
Sorry it took a while to reply but I have been workong out of town and computer access is very limited. To answer one question I feel like my truck doesn't have enough get up and go, meaning it boggs until about 2500 rpms then takes off. I would like to have more out of the hole power. I know it is a little harder with a manual trans vs automatic but I have always felt that a standard trans pulls a heavy load better than a auto. I pull a 32 foot fifth wheel with my atv trailer behind it, weight wise it's about 9500 pounds. It shouldn't be any trouble for this truck but it peggs the egt's real fast. I think an intercooler is in the very near future. Thanks for all the help. I will get my injectors looked at.
do you still have your catalytic converter on it mine was clogged when i first bought mine and it wouldnt hardly do nothin in first gear -but now i cant get traction on most roads after all mods
I have a 3" down pipe, an EDGE evolution programer, and it is straight piped. I know the 3:55 gears suck and I am currently looking for a straight axle to put under the front end. I already have a 4:10 rear end to put in whenever I find the straight axle to match. Other than that it is stock.
