The first thing he said was, "I want to thank Mr. Wayne for helping me get that role."
He was saying that "The Duke" just kept stalling and putting off the fight scene, where he dies.
He said that when the day finally came that 'ole John Wayne HAD to do the scene, he showed up intoxicated!
"Alright. Let's do this," was the way he said JW accepted the scene and it's finality.
BD said that during the fight scene, when John Wayne was supposed to hit him, that he ACTUALLY DID, and BROKE Bruce Dern's nose!
That fight scene (if memory serves me) was filmed in one take.
(I don't think Bruce Dern could tolerate another whoopin'.)
God Bless John Wayne.

There are a number of fight scenes, The Duke was in, that turned into the real thing. He and Ward Bond enjoyed a good outing...
On a side note, most people never really learned to appreciate how versatile he was in his acting career. Yes, he had some stinkers but, he was not afraid to take on many different persona's. His keen sense of humor was evident in many of his films and he often enjoyed laughing at hisowndamnself.
Thanks Duke.
