You have the 7.3L IDI, I believe. If you put a gasoline motor in place of the diesel one, I think you will need a new transmission, since the diesel and gasoline engines do not share the same bolt patterns where the transmission mounts up to them.

Your post is moderately difficult to understand, so I hope that answered your questions.

Question for you tranny guys. I have a 7.3 IDI turbo diesel 250 4x4. I'm sure it has the 42.

How do I find out if it has the close or wide ratio trans? It has 4:10 gears as well

t18 to zf5 swap

Hey I just caught your roll here and wanted to know if I could do this swap on my 76 with 360. I have the old school but wanted a better hwy runner with the gas prices still in the sky. Is this possible because I think I saw one sitting in the pull a part yard for $99. It is sitting under a 89 f250 but I wasn't going to spend time on it unless I had some positive feedback! I think it was a 2wd 47 but if it isn't will it be a pain the rear if I don't have 4wd? Come back now!

I have been told a ZF-5 but what model years trucks should I look for to find one? Thanks!
the 92 f150 used a borg/warner t18/t19 4speed tranny

As long as it's a ZF5 from a diesel 7.3l then it will bolt up. There are some wiring modifications that need to be made in some circumstances. Search "ZF5 swap" and several threads should appear that go over the details.

Edit: Ope, Mike beat me to it...

after reading this ya'll have me worried about the zf5 i just installed
i just installed a sd engine into my truck with a zf6 fly wheel(stock), clutch basket, pressure plate and clutch(valair) into my obs mated to a 95 zf5 ... please tell me that everything is gonna mate up when i push that clutch in and release it the first time

my worry is the comments about the throwout bearing and imput shaft engagement

Hmm. Well I can't say for certain. Someone here should know. But there were some e99's that came with the zf5 and I think the e40d and 4r100 and interchangeable to a point.

the e99 engine originally had a zf6 hence the mash up of parts

Was the clutch plate for the SF5 or The ZF6? The ZF6 has a larger input shaft than the ZF5. When the dual mass fw in the 97 cracked the bell on the S47 that was in it, I replaced it with an S42 from a 95. Been in her for 40K with no problems. The S42 and s47 are absolutly interchangable.

I know thisnthreauis YEARS old but im looking for some insite and the guys in here seem to know zfs...

I currently run 5.8 zf5 in my bronco. Its syncros are ****. I picked up a recently rebuilt zf5 460 for next to nothing from a friend. Question is can i swap the guts out of the 460 case into my sbf case.

My research has taught me i will need to swap the input shaft and reset the shafts preload, but im questionable on the rear case halves and what is different between the small block one vs diesel / 460. I will use the matching case in my truck but will there be a lroblem with bearings/shift rails?
