Kind of iffy for sure, but I'd still check it out.

Brown Falcon, I had three different 6cyl four speed trucks back in the 80's and 90's. I know I would not use it much but it was really good for pulling steep hills at a crawl or coming back down super slow when you put it in 1st and low lock. I had one with this 5 speed. It is so high geared you have to rev it up to get going even in my drive which is up hill. Its worse than taking off in 2nd in an old 4 speed. I guess its just a preference. Im kinda partial to the old school stuff.

Think it's worth having it checked out first? There's a good tranny shop in town that will tear it down and inspect it and reassemble it for $150.
Maybe the guy would let me pay for that inspection before buying it...
It's a great deal if it's in good shape, saw another trans/t-case combo ZF5 S47 going for $1000, and one like my '88 S42/t-case going for $950.

Not a bad option, but is the guy going to reimburse your $150 if the shop finds out the trans is a POS???

I doubt he would. Worth a try though I guess.
How many miles are a ZF5 usually good for before needing synchros, gears, etc...?

I know that they can be a bit spendy to rebuild, so I want one that will last me a little while.

Yeah, we are kinda far apart.....
If you wanted to, I bet you could rebuild one yourself, they aren't that hard.
If you are at all interested in the details on rebuilding one, let me know, and I can help you out.

I might do that Ian.
I'm still trying to figure out if I should use the S42 for my swap or find a S47 for it...

Evan, go buy that S47. Sell your S42 and break even... then your wifey can't biotch about the money you spent.

That's what I'm hoping to do. She said I can buy the S47 if I get it inspected first...

I just want to get rid of this auto before I'm "forced" to buy a $4k transmission when this one goes out...
