I have a strange starter issue. It on seems to happen went the temps are cold. I have gone through 4 starters so far and can't believe this one is bad to. They all have been factory starters. What happens is the starter engages the will not disengage. Even if you shut the key off the starter keeps cranking until you disconnect the battery. To get it to disengage I have to loosen the starter. Then it will work fine till it's cold out again. I am starting to believe I have a cracked flex plate. Anyone got any other suggestions???
What year truck is it? Some 99's did have flexplate problems, but ...
This sounds more like the solenoid itself is sticking, and by "solenoid" I mean the relay on the fenderwell.
If your battery is going bad, and voltage is low, when cranking, the relay/solenoid will generate a lot of heat at the contacts inside, and will actually weld itself together enough to stick and crank forever. Used to happen with my '74 highboy until I changed the battery.
One thing to check is, find that relay/solenoid on the fenderall, and you will see a small wire that plugs into the relay. It should just pull off.
Next time the starter sticks, try disconnecting that small wire before disconnecting the battery. If disconnecting the small wire makes it stop cranking, you have a bad relay further up the wiring, or a bad ignition switch, or a short somewhere.
Just to let guys know if they run into the same problem. The issue turned out to be the solenoid on the passenger side fender. Replaced that and problem solved
