Have any of you used or seen any good undercoating products? I'm kinda leaning towards bed liner sprayed on the undercarriage, but that would be expensive as hell. What do you guys have on your rigs? This will be a street only, fair weather truck when its done so it won't see alot of severe duty it just needs to look good and keep it from rusting out. Thanks for your help.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Aug-02 AT 07:08 PM (EST)]I coated the entire undercarriage of my truck with POR-15(Paint Over Rust) It comes in gray. I applied mine with a brush and you can paint it any color you want after it dries. Make sure you wear long sleeves and gloves because this stuff dries very hard. If you paint it over bolts, it will basically be entombed.
I like the POR but it is difficult to paint underneath...as is anything. Once painted..then go back and paint it undercoat black. Holds up fine..no water will get under the POR
There is a new product (Four Wheeler magazine Sept 2002 page 118) that claims to be a sound damper/undercoating. www.quietnoise.com Might be something to look at.
I'm not sure what Gibbs you would be talking about. I know OF Joe who used to coach the Redskins and later did announcing, but we're no relation. Sorry.
I have a 50' F-3 that I want to modernize a bit. I have made mention of it on the 48-60 forum in 'Truck Stories' and 'What to do with Flathead 6.' Some very compelling reading.
I have had membership for a long time, but just used it to read some tech articles and then I would just look at the galleries. I have just recently gotten involved with the forums and am addicted.
Thanks for the info. I'll have to look on-line as I have never been to a large car show that actually had vendors. We are rather rural here in Wyoming. There are a lot of car nuts per capita, but the capita is pretty small.
Thanks for the info about yourself. I frequent the 48 to 60 forum but must admit that I haven't had the time to read all the "Truck Stories" otherwise I would have remembered your name.
Joe Gibbs was not only my favorite coach, I've been a Skins fan since I was a kid, but was and is the owner of the Nascar #18 team that used to sport my fav driver Dale Jarrett. It's a shame you're not related, we could deal some bodywork techniques and tips.
Oh well, here's a link I found through a quick search of "Wyoming POR-15". There's quite a few more links out there so look for one in your area if this don't do it.
I guess I should clarify my car show attendance. I have been to some smaller, local club shows with about 50 cars or less. I have dragged my wife a few hundred miles just because I heard there was a show. I was reffering to large shows, like the goodguys shows, when I said I hadn't been to any big shows. An other problem is that every show in the area has the same vehicles.
How do Pickle-x (or Ras-o-nil as it used to be called) and POR-15 compare? Or are they two different types of products?
I did a little research on Ras-o-nil because I'm not familiar with that product. It sounds like it's the same thing as Ospho which is a rust converter. If that's the case, it's not a paint. It's something you would use prior to painting, even with POR or similar products.
There's a few threads here about Ospho that you may want to check into.
