73 highboy oil pan and dip stick trouble
Hey guys,
Talk about confused! My 360 has two oil dip sticks. looks like bubby has been at it again. The oil pan sump is to the rear of the of the engine and a secound dip stick was added to the side of the oil pan farther back fron the original location. The front dip stick bottoms out in the pan and does not show oil with six quarts of oil. Has some one put the oil pan in backwards for some reason?
Any help with this would be great!
Joel

Sounds like you might have a passenger car engine, or timing cover. The 4wd oil pan should be rear sump, with a side mounted dipstick.
The car oil pans are front sump, with the dipstick in the timing cover.
The oil pan cannot be put on backwards, as far as I know-with Ford engines.
The rear sump is considered the best.
I went through this when I installed my 429 in my Highboy, so I just removed the front car dipstick, and siliconed up a nice shiny stainless steel bolt to plug the hole.

FE has the front sump dipsticks through the block, the 385 series and the windsor series engines go through the timing cover.
Yes sounds like someone took an engine out of a passenger car or a 2wd truck and swapped it into your truck and just swapped the truck pan on. This may be good as your a lot more likely to find it being a 390 IF it actually came out of a car.
