halfway to work this morning, i blew a hole in one of my high pressure oil hoses- popped right through the stainless braided sleeve! lost oil pressure and the thing died right away.
it looked like i had simply poured five gallons of oil all over the engine like syrup on a flapjack.
an $80 tow and $300 in new parts and i was good to go, or so i thought. as i was driving it away from the shop, i noticed i had the most crappy steering imaginable. i took it back and we figured out that the steering gear box was shot. best we can figure is the combination of me going 75mph at the time, no power assist on steering after hose failure (due to engine shutting down), and me pulling over to the roadside was enough to strip the gears out. so i get to spend another $350 tomorrow. sweet.
anyone had a similar experience? the truck cranks and cranks before starting now, when before it would fire right up- air? any hints on recovering from the oil soaking? other things to watch for?
Eric, it will take time for the air to get out. Just run the weeee out of it. As far as cleaning, lots of degreaser, and low pressure water. Alot of people like the simple green, but it will leave a white film on everything.
Eric, I use Super Clean get it at wal-mart use it on warm engine full strength to get all the mess off I use a garden hose with a good nozzle, just watch alternator, IDM and other electrics. Does a good job and leaves no residue.
Been there...
But I blew the fitting out of the HPOP, stripped the threads right out of it. I was on some back roads so I just coasted off to the side. No steering trouble, but I had oil drip from my inner fender for almost 6 months, no kidding!
ditto on the cranking. it will take a few miles (50-100) to work all the air out of the system. been there. i had one of my hoses get a hole because it rubbed through on the fpr (i rerouted the hpo hose for the hpx mod) so it was my fault. lesson learned. make sure the hose isn't rubbing on anything.
i dont buy the steering box bs. I just blew my pressure line clean out of my power steering pump and had to drive 15 miles w/o power steering. when I got to autozone I purchased a new line and changed it on the spot. Took about 20 minutes and a quart of fluid. My box is fine. Mine actually seems to steer smoother/better after the line was replaced. As for the oil system, it takes time to bleed the air out, I use engine brite and a garden hose. and non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner for the hard to reach places.
I ain't buying the steering box story either. With that much oil all over the engine compartment I bet the belts and pulleys all got oiled and the belt is just slipping on the power steering pump.
got it back from the shop just now. the hose i needed came as part of a kit i guess that both hoses, other seals, and galley plugs (so i was told). shopping for the hoses alone last night online i found the hoses for 279, so the 300 for those and other thingies sounded not too bad.
as for the steering box... the oil soaked pulley was what i thought of first too, but with engine off and wheels straight we observed a LOT of motion in column all the way down to the box that translated to zero motion out of the box. we are talking like 90 degrees to each the left and right before moving the arm that comes out of box.
steering already had a few inches of play anyhow, so i think it had been on its last legs for some time. the new one works great, although i have to say i got used to the loose steering and now the tighter action feels weird.

probably just really weird timing with the steering box...
as for the HPOP, it will take a couple HARD miles... took mine over 100 miles driving hard to clear it up completely
Now that I think about it, I drove the truck home about 4 miles once with a cracked ps pump bracket and no belt at all, no steering or anything. No problems with the box...
Also, each high pressure oil line cost about $80, I have no idea what the Kit is they are referring to...
Hope this never happens to me! Good to know ahead though.... Hope things work out...
That steering thing sounds real fishy. I agree with Jim and Rodney. It's probably just the belt slipping. Those boxes are real tough.
coincidence- maybe. bad box- definitely. lots of motion going into box and none coming out.
no moral to this story really other than now i know what the powerstroke engine cover is for. had i had that mounted up, i could have saved 12 bucks at the u-wash-it! i think i got 90% of the oil all cleaned up. it's starting better now, and runs well.
The moral of this story is ask the forum for help first. I've got about 10 hpop lines in the shop just collecting dust. And would have been happy to send you one. LOL But I understand your situation. Just glad you got it fixed.
